Non-tenured Assistant professor (2.5 year) vacancy available in the field of Climate Science at the Niels Bohr Institute, University of Copenhagen, Denmark.

This position is support for the CriticalEarth project – a Horizon 2020 Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions, Innovative Training Network (ITN) 

Niels Bohr Institute's (NBI) section for the Physics of Ice, Climate and Earth (PICE), Faculty of Science at University of Copenhagen is offering an assistant professor position (2.5 years) starting 01.03.2021. PICE studies the elements of the Earth and climate system – the atmosphere, oceans, ice sheets, sea ice, solid Earth, and the interactions between them.

The assistant professor’s duties will primarily include research within the climate system, including obligations with regard to publication/scientific communication and research-based teaching with associated examination obligations within the ITN network CriticalEarth. To a limited extent this may also include performance of other duties.

Research should be in the field of proxy development and proxy-based synchronization of ice cores to different archives using stratigraphic markers, between the Holocene and last interglacial. And an experimental and innovative person would be favoured.

Further the assistant professor is to ensure the day to day running of the Critical Earth project - “Multiscale Critical Transitions in the Earth System - funded through the Horizon 2020 Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions programme under Grant number 956170 and  provide key support to an ITN network of 15 to be recruited PhD Fellows (ESRs), who will be trained to research new methods for assessing the mechanisms and associated risks of critical transitions in the climate. As art of the ITN network the position offers a strong, cross-disciplinary network among leading Universities and research institutions across Europe and with contacts to industry, governmental- and non-governmental institutions.

Assessment of applicants for the assistant professor role  will consider their level of documented, internationally competitive research. Teaching qualifications are not mandatory but documented teaching qualifications and teaching experience will be considered.

Qualifications

Required qualifications and skills:

  • PhD degree in a field related to climate science
  • Research experience in the field of proxy-based climate synchronization

Experience of teaching or supervision of students Additional preferred skills

  • Experience coordinating an EU research project
  • Experience with drafting and reporting deliverables to EU, including Data Management and GDPR strategies
  • Experience of web design and publishing content
  • Skills in communications and media relations and social media

Work task description

The position is part scientific research within the field of paleoclimatic climate change and management of the ITN project, the tasks involve, but are not limited to:

Research Activities in the field of past climate change and synchronization between paleo records, including obligations with regard to publication/scientific communication and research-based teaching with associated examination obligations.

Science Project Management of the ITN project Critical Earth. The day-to-day management of the CriticalEarth will be handled by the Science Project Manager (SPM) in support of the Project Coordinator, together with the secretariat and EU Liaison Office at UCPH. This includes; 1) support in the recruitment of 15 PhD students. 2) Reporting to EU The SPM will be tasked with drafting key documents, such as the Data Management Plan and GDPR and Communication strategies for the project. The Manager will also coordinate the submission of other scientific and financial reports with project members, Work Package owners, the PI and EU Liaison Office to ensure the timely submission of deliverables to the EU portal. 3) Construction and management of ITN network website.  The website should act as a networking hub for the 15 PhD students, with details of workshops and training opportunities, as well as a platform for outreach and dissemination of the ITN project findings. 4) Internal communication The SPM will maintain the web-pages of the project and will establish a monthly newsletter and UCPH ERDA account to keep the network informed of progress, forthcoming meetings and opportunities.  

Conditions of employment

Starting date will be 01.03.2020 and the position is full time for two and a half years (2.5 years), dedicated to lab and desk based research as an Assistant Professor as well as managing the ITN grant.

Employment will be in accordance with the provisions of the collective agreement between the Danish Ministry of Finance and AC (the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations). The monthly salary will be based on the number of years of work experience (seniority) with the possibility to negotiate a salary supplement based on prior experiences and qualifications.

Terms of employment

The position is covered by the Memorandum on Job Structure for Academic Staff. Terms of appointment and payment accord to the agreement between the Ministry of Finance and The Danish Confederation of Professional Associations on Academics in the State.

The starting salary is currently up to DKK 437.843 including annual supplement (+ pension up to DKK 74.871). Negotiation for salary supplement is possible
