The Astronomy Department at Cornell University invites applications for a tenure-track faculty position at the assistant professor level. We encourage applications from candidates who demonstrate outstanding research, teaching, mentorship, and leadership in the field of planetary science. The Department will prioritize candidates whose research focus is on our solar system, whether through participation in solar system exploration missions, telescopic observations, experimental or theoretical studies in any relevant planetary science discipline. The successful candidate will be expected to participate in research aligned with priorities from the recent Planetary Science Decadal that enhances Cornell’s current strengths in Solar System research and introduces new directions that complement areas of ongoing work.


We expect candidates to have an established record of high-impact research and to demonstrate the potential to build an externally-funded independent research program. The successful candidate will also have a strong record and/or commitment to excellence in teaching, advising, mentorship, and leadership of diverse groups. A Ph.D. in Astronomy, Planetary Sciences or a closely related field is required, and postdoctoral experience is preferred.

[Pay Range: $79,400 - $125,000] Actual salary offers in the College of Arts and Sciences will be based on education, experience, discipline, and relevant skills.

The hiring rate of pay for the successful candidate will be determined considering the following criteria:

  • Education level to the extent education is relevant to the position.
