POSITION DESCRIPTION
The Division of Earth and Climate Sciences in the Nicholas School of the Environment at Duke University invites applications for a tenure-track position at the Assistant Professor level in area of Geochemistry of Earth-Water-Air Systems. We seek applicants with a strong background in earth sciences and expertise in chemical reactions among rocks, water, the atmosphere, soils, and/or biota. We are particularly interested in scientists whose research pertains to fundamental questions related to climate change, mitigation of climate change, and energy transformation.

Candidates should be able to establish research programs that integrate field, laboratory, and modeling studies. The successful applicant is expected to develop an externally funded research program, teach and advise undergraduate and graduate students, and contribute to appropriate service activities within the University and the applicant’s professional field.
 
This position is part of a cluster hiring initiative in the Nicholas School focused on climate and contribute to Duke University’s institution-wide commitment to addressing climate change.
 
We recognize that cluster hires can provide additional support for new faculty from a diversity of backgrounds and promote intellectual synergy. Joint appointments with other Duke University departments and schools will also be considered. Appointment at a level higher than Assistant Professor will be considered in extraordinary cases.

QUALIFICATIONS
Basic qualifications
Ph.D. (or equivalent international degree) received no later than May, 2023.
Preferred qualifications
 
Candidates should demonstrate an exceptional research trajectory with the promise of developing innovative externally-funded research programs that will advance knowledge of, or solutions to, important problems in earth and climate sciences. Candidates should show potential to be effective teachers and advisors of undergraduate and graduate students, and enthusiasm to integrate elements of diversity, equity, and inclusion into their teaching and research activities.
