Position description

The Underground Physics group at UC Berkeley is involved a range of precision low-energy neutrino experiments. This position will primarily focus on a new detector development effort called Eos, which seeks to demonstrate the impact of novel neutrino detection technology. This technology could be applied in future fundamental physics experiments such as Theia, and for nonproliferation activities such as WATCHMAN. There is also the potential to be involved in the SNO+ neutrino experiment. SNO+ is a large liquid scintillator experiment located in SNOLAB, Canada, with a broad physics program including neutrinoless double beta decay, solar and geo neutrinos. Results have been published from an initial water phase, and the detector is now taking data with a pure scintillator fill. The Berkeley group focuses on detector operations, calibrations, simulations and physics analysis.

Duties of the position include but are not limited to:

  • Leadership role on new Eos project, including design, construction, and data analysis.
  • Potential for involvement in development of new scintillators for next-generation neutrino experiments.
  • Potential for involvement in analysis of data from the SNO+ neutrino experiment.
  • Supervision of graduate and undergraduate students on these projects.
  • Preparation of quarterly and annual reports on relevant efforts.
