Assistant Researcher - University of California, Berkeley - Department of Physics

The Department of Physics at the University of California, Berkeley seeks applications for an Assistant Researcher to work in the area of particle physics, with an expected start date in Spring 2021. This is a full-time, 100% appointment.

The position will be in the Weak Interaction group in the Physics Department of U.C. Berkeley. The group focuses on searches for Lepton Number and Lepton Flavor violating processes with the CUORE and CUPID experiments at Gran Sasso, Italy, and Mu2e experiment at Fermilab.

The job duties and responsibilities of this position include research and development of the novel instrumentation for nuclear and particle physics experiments. In particular, lead the development of the state-of-the-art bolometric detectors for the CUPID experiment, organization and operations of the local bolometric R&D facility, organization of the effort to test and commission front-end electronics boards for the Mu2e experiment, develop new simulation and analysis tools for the searches for lepton number violation with CUORE, CUPID, and Mu2e. Prepare high-profile publications, prepare annual reports to the Department of Energy, and assist in developing funding proposals.

Basic qualifications: (must be met at the time of application):
Ph.D. or equivalent international degree

Additional qualifications: (must be met by the start date of the job):
Five to ten years of work experience post Ph.D.

Preferred qualifications:
Ph.D. in Physics or Nuclear Engineering, with specialization in particle physics, nuclear physics, or instrumentation development. Excellence in developing nuclear and particle physics instrumentation, experience with the cryogenic detector development, including operations of dilution refrigerator systems, low-noise and low-vibration environments, custom electronics, and data acquisition systems. Working knowledge of analysis and simulation tools (ROOT, Geant4). Demonstrated record of preparing scientific or technical publications in peer-reviewed journals.

Salary range: $78,400 to $83,300 (full-time, 100% rate). Starting salary will be commensurate with experience. For information on UC benefits, please visit:
