Position description

The Department of Physics & Astronomy at UCLA seeks applications for a full-time (100%) Assistant Researcher in experimental astroparticle physics.

Qualified candidates will have a Ph.D. in Physics or a related field, and will be generally experienced in the design, fabrication, and operation of experimental apparatus related to low-background, rare-event detection. The successful candidate will have at least 3 years of postdoctoral experience directly related to the operation of Time Projection Chambers (TPCs), including gaseous and noble liquid. Advanced knowledge of TPCs is preferred, and the successful candidate should have experience in data-taking and analysis techniques related to dark matter physics. The successful candidate should display a skill set related to liquid argon (LAr) TPCs, the associated cryogenics, and the interplay of the systems. Direct experience operating cryogenic systems down to liquid nitrogen temperature is preferred. The successful candidate should possess leadership and coordination qualities demonstrated within a world-class experimental collaboration. Experience with silicon photomultiplier-based readout is highly desirable. This position is for participation in the DarkSide-20k experiment, a direct dark matter search program located at Laboratori Nazionali del Gran Sasso (LNGS) in Assergi, Italy. The successful candidate will be based at LNGS in Italy, and frequent travel between/around the US and Europe is expected.
