Associate Lecturer in Physics
University of York, Department of Physics
United Kingdom

We seek to appoint three Associate Lecturers on teaching and scholarship contracts in the Department of Physics. These roles are for three years initially, and would ideally begin in August 2019 allowing the successful candidates to familiarise themselves with the Department and prepare teaching materials prior to the start of the academic year.  We are happy to consider part-time appointments, for example to take into consideration part-time research funding, or family commitments.  Please note: if you require sponsorship for this position, we can only accept applications for full time working.

The Department offers both three year BSc and four year MPhys degree programmes in Physics, Theoretical Physics and Physics with Astrophysics; and joint degree programmes in Maths and Physics and Physics with Philosophy. Many modules involve tutorials and small group teaching sessions in addition to the lectures. Practical work is emphasised, both in experimental and computational laboratories, and through final-year projects. Student recruitment is buoyant and the quality of students entering the first year continues to rise each year. The Department has a strong reputation for the support offered to our students and for the quality of its teaching,

As a Department we aim to ensure that there is a supportive and egalitarian culture at all levels and across all staff groups. We promote good practice and a strong culture of equality in higher education, and are proud of our Juno Champion Award and Athena SWAN Silver Award.

You will cover a range of teaching activities which will include the delivery of lecture courses, associated preparation and marking of the relevant examination(s); supervision of teaching laboratories; supervision of final year MPhys and/or BSc projects; and leading tutorials. It is expected, in due course, that you will assume leadership roles within the Department in specific areas associated with supporting and developing teaching activities.

You will have a PhD in Physics or equivalent experience and familiarity with teaching and learning at undergraduate level such as in the role of a graduate teaching assistant or a module lecturer, or in an evidenced similar context. You will have detailed knowledge of physics and mathematics sufficient to develop your teaching and provide relevant learning support to students across different levels of academic ability. You will have experience using different delivery techniques to enthuse and engage students and highly developed oral and written communication skills to engage effectively with a wide ranging audience.  Able to supervise the work of students and provide advice on study skills you should have longstanding enthusiasm for teaching, an appetite for repeatedly refining and improving your practice and a willingness to work closely with students and colleagues in a mutually supportive environment.

Informal enquiries may be directed to Dr Phil Lightfoot (Deputy Head of Department (Teaching))

(, 01904 324868).

The Department of Physics values all employees for the qualities and skills they bring to the workplace and aims to be a diverse and egalitarian community in which all can thrive.
