The Department of Marine Sciences (http://marine.gu.se/english/) is Sweden's most complete environment for marine research and education, and is one of only a few such organizations in Europe. The University of Gothenburg has excellent marine infrastructure facilities including state-of-the-art instrumentation, two large research stations, and a new 49-m research ship that will come into service during 2019 (http://loven.gu.se/english/). The University's researchers also have access to the icebreaker Oden for polar research (http://polar.se/en/). The Department of Marine Sciences, which was formed in 2015, brings together expertise in physical oceanography, marine chemistry, marine biology, marine geology and marine conservation. The department hence enjoys excellent conditions for addressing the challenges of the future within marine research and education. The department is host to the Centre for Sea and Society (http://havochsamhalle.gu.se/english/), an entry point to all marine and maritime activities within the University of Gothenburg. The Gothenburg area is a national hub for management of the sea, including being the location of the Swedish Institute for the Marine Environment (http://havsmiljoinstitutet.se/english/), hosted by the University of Gothenburg, and the Swedish Agency for Marine and Water Management (https://www.havochvatten.se/en).



The Department of Marine Sciences is situated at and has permanent staff at three locations; in Gothenburg as well as at the research stations at Kristineberg and Tjärnö on the coast north of Gothenburg.

We are now looking to recruit an assosciate lecturer to the department of Marine Sciences.

Subject area description

The Department of Marine Sciences wishes to develop and strengthen its marine chemistry activities through a new appointment as Associate Senior Lecturer.  The strategy of the department includes developing collaboration between different specialisations within marine science, and also working with the Sven Lovén Centre for marine infrastructure (http://loven.gu.se/english/) to further develop the infrastructure as a national and international resource for research and education. Priority will be given to candidates whose research plans contribute to this strategy.

 

Marine chemistry includes studies of chemical processes and their driving forces in the water column and in the sediment, as well as at the sediment-water and water-atmosphere boundaries. Such processes include biogeochemistry, geochemistry, and environmental marine chemistry, and its interfaces to other marine science disciplines. Marine Chemistry also includes the development and use of state-of-the-art techniques for measurements, observations and sampling including analytical techniques for the detection and quantification of solutes and particles in the sea.

 

Job assignments

The successful candidate will develop a research programme in her/his chosen research area. The research shall be conducted in projects led and initialized by the candidate, as well as in projects led by other researchers at the department. The candidate is expected to set up a research group in a relevant research area, including attracting external research funding. The candidate´s research profile should harmonize with existing marine chemistry research and demonstrate opportunities for interdisciplinary collaboration with other marine disciplines in the Department, as well as national and international collaboration.The successful candidate is expected to be actively involved in teaching within the marine sciences. In addition, the position includes supervision of bachelor and master students in their degree projects, as well as doctoral students. Other duties include creating and maintaining contacts with the surrounding society and may include serving on committees at the University.

 

The successful candidate is expected to teach in Swedish within two years.

 

The candidate without university teacher training is also expected to undergo courses in teaching and learning in higher education. The university offers courses in Swedish.

 

Eligibility

Candidates must have a doctoral degree in a relevant subject area, awarded no more than 5 years before the closing date for applications. In addition, the ability to teach in Swedish or English is a requirement.

 

Assessment

The assessment of applications will firstly be based on scientific proficiency, and secondly on pedagogical merits. Both will be assessed with the same care. The scientific proficiency is assessed through well-documented scientific competence, including publications in leading international journals. There will also be assessment of ability to develop research activities, make presentations at conferences, and to carry out scientific assignments. A postdoctoral appointment and a track record in securing external funding are not mandatory but would strengthen an application.

 

The pedagogical merits are assessed through documented pedagogical experience, including teaching experience and any involvement in developing or enhancing courses, and successfully supervising master and bachelor students.

 

The overall assessment will include how the candidate’s research plans contribute to the strategy of the department. It will also take into consideration the ability to perform other duties associated with such appointment, collaborate with others and contribute to a positive impact on the general activities of the department.

 

The candidate´s achievements will be assessed in relation to the active working time since her/his doctoral degree. The assessment will have a significant focus on the candidate’s future potential.

The employment as an associate senior lecturer is limited to six years and is defined as a career-development position where the employee, after approved examination, will be promoted to a permanent position as senior lecturer.
