Career Stage:  MSc degree

Open date for applications: November 8th 2018

Closing Date for applications: November 22th 2018 23:00 WEST (Western European Summer Time)

The International Iberian Nanotechnology Laboratory - INL (, was founded under an international legal framework to perform interdisciplinary research and to deploy and articulate nanotechnology for the benefit of society. INL aims to become the world-wide hub for nanotechnology addressing society’s grand challenges in Aging & Wellbeing and Mobility & Urban Living and developing a Safe & Secure Society. The King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST) is an international Research University located by the Red Sea in Saudi Arabia.

SR&TD project specifications: INL participates in the following Scientific Research and Technological Development project (‘SR&TD project’) co-funded by the Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia (‘FCT’) and FEDER:

(a)Name of the project: Correlated Analysis of Inorganic Solar Cells in and outside an Electron Microscope (CASOLEM);

(b)Reference number: POCI-01-0145-FEDER-028917;

(c)Description: The project "Correlated Analysis of Inorganic Solar Cells in and outside an electron microscope" aims to fabricate in-situ TEM cartridges for carrying out electrical measurements of CIGS solar cells. These chips will be universally adaptable, provide flexibility and significant advantages to the existing commercial ones and will enable simultaneous experimentation both inside and outside the TEM. Subsequent to their fabrication they will be employed for the study of a solar cell device (CIGS) under near-operating conditions. This will provide unprecedented insight into relevant processes at grain boundaries and interfaces by enabling correlated multi-scale analysis with resolutions ranging from the atom to the entire device.

(d)  Scientific Area: Electron Microscopy

Description of the functions and key primary responsibilities: The successful Candidate will work on the task 1 of the SR&TD project, and will be assigned the following working plan:

  • Design and fabrication of cartridges for correlated multi-scale analysis of solar cell materials;
  • In addition to working at the INL, the Research Associateship (”Bolseiro”) will undertake several periods of research (up to 6 months) in KAUST, Saudi Arabia. The Bolseiro will work in the design and fabrication of novel in-situ TEM chips. He/She will also carry out the respective viability tests of the chips, in and outside the TEM.

Supervision: The work plan will be developed at the INL under the scientific guidance of Dr. Leonard Deepak Francis; at KAUST, the Bolseiro will be integrated in Dr. Pedro Costa’s group.

Eligibility conditions, required qualifications and expertise: Candidates must comply with the following requirements:

(a)Hold a MSc Degree in Materials Science and Engineering, Physics, Chemistry or related field;

(b)The position requires that the applicant be a Portuguese or an European Union citizen; a non-European Union citizen will be considered if residing in Portugal;

(c)Not having spent more than twelve months, during the three years immediately prior to the deadline for submission of applications, at the INL;

(d)Expertise/scientific knowledge in electron microscopy, clean-room fabrication processes and/or thin film solar cell devices will be an advantage;

(e)Must be available to live abroad and be fluent in English (the official working language at KAUST is English).

Supporting Documents

Candidates must enclose the following supporting documents in pdf format:

(a)Cover letter (with statement of interest);

(b)Curriculum Vitae;

(c)Official transcripts of all relevant academic degrees;

(d)Copy of identification document;

(e)For non-EU Citizens residing permanently in Portugal, documental evidence attesting the legal right to reside in Portugal.

Selection Criteria

Candidates will be evaluated according to the following criteria:

  • Curriculum vitae: 50%
  • Interview(s): 50%

Selection Committee

The selection of candidates will be carried out by a Selection Committee consisting of the following persons:

1)Dr. Leonard Deepak Francis – Research Group Leader (INL)

2)Dr. Pedro Costa – Professor (KAUST)

3)Dr. Junjie Li – (INL)

4)Patricia Oliveira- Human Resources

Evaluation process

The evaluation process will follow a three-stage process:

 1. Candidate eligibility check:

Only full applications will be considered for evaluation. The applicant will be responsible for the data submission and validation. The application language is English.

Candidates who do not meet the eligibility requirements will not be included in the CV evaluation.

2. Curriculum Vitae evaluation:

The top four ranked candidates will be shortlisted for interview, provided however that they pass the thresholds for this stage. The threshold for the curriculum vitae evaluation, is (80%) of the possible score (i.e., 40). Candidates who do not pass the thresholds will be excluded from the evaluation process.

3. Interview(s) and final assessment:

Interviews will be conducted through telephone, web conference or face-to-face meetings, as may be deemed appropriate.

A formal report will be issued by the selection committee recommending the selected candidate ranking candidates in order of preference.
