The research group for Geomicrobiology at the University of Tübingen offers an open position for a postdoctoral researcher who is passionate about electron microscopy as

Cryo-FIB-SEM instrument scientist (m/f/d; TV-L E13, 100%; 3 years)

The candidate is expected to:

  • Develop and establish sample preparation methods and workflows for cryo focused ion beam scanning electron microscopy (cryo-FIB-SEM)
  • Provide on-site support and training at the FIB-SEM (Zeiss Crossbeam 550L) for other scientists
  • Participate in electron microscopy lab courses and training programs
  • Support the preparation of digital resources (training videos and manuals)
  • Supervise BSc, MSc and PhD students and contribute to various existing research projects
  • Write research proposals and publications

Successful candidates will have the following background and skills:

  • A PhD and 1-2 years of postdoc experience in geomicrobiology or a related research field
  • Profound experience with operating a SEM (ideally a FIB-SEM and/or a cryo-SEM)
  • Theoretical and practical experience with cryo electron microscopy applications, including sample preparation, as well as experience with user support at electron microscopes are of advantage
  • Knowledge of techniques for preparing geomicrobiological samples (e.g. cell-mineral aggregates) is beneficial
  • Experience working in interdisciplinary projects
  • Very good communication skills in English, able to work in a team

We are offering a position for 3 years (with possible extension) in an interdisciplinary, international, and dynamic team of microbiologists, geochemists and geoscientists. The starting date is September 2020 or as soon as possible thereafter (an earlier start date is also possible). Employment (TVL E13, 100%) will be arranged by the administration of the University of Tübingen. People with disabilities will be preferred in case of equal qualification.
