Job no: 493896
Work type: Full time
Location: Hobart
Categories: Academic - Professorial Level

The University of Tasmania is a place-based University with a mission to enhance the intellectual, economic, social and cultural future of Tasmania, and to contribute to the world in areas that reflect our distinctive place-based advantages.  Critical to achieving this vision is employing people who are aligned to and can contribute to a values-based, relational, diverse, and development-focused University.

The School of Natural Sciences is known for world-leading research in ecology, astronomy, economic geology, separation science and applied mathematics, and has the largest concentration of ERA 5’s in the University. Researchers in the School work in a dynamic, productive and collaborative culture and are supported by access to sophisticated infrastructure including a well-resourced Central Science Laboratory, high performance computer facilities, radio and optical telescopes, laser ablation and an ICPMS suite. There are strong collaborative links with Industry and the University’s flagship Institutes: the Institute for Marine and Antarctic Studies and the Menzies Institute for Medical Research.

The Dean is responsible for continuing to drive the long-standing culture of research excellence in the school, leading the development of long-term school strategy and managing and negotiating high-level strategic relationships with universities, research institutes, governments, and industry and independent collaborators. The Dean will drive a positive, inclusive and high-performing team culture and enhance organisational strength and financial viability.

This key leadership role would suit a highly strategic, creative and visionary leader with demonstrated success in leading large-scale collaborative programs across the sciences and in leading a large and complex academic unit.  Essential for success are the full suite of executive leadership skills, a passion for excellence, and the ability to lead change, drive new relationships and influence policy.
