Identified Position - two positions available with one being reserved for female candidates only*

Position overview

The Research School of Astronomy and Astrophysics (RSAA) at The Australian National University (ANU) is welcoming applications from world-class researchers for two tenured faculty positions; one of these positions is an identified female only position and in accordance with the University’s Identified Positions Procedure will be filled by a female. The priority areas are cosmology, Galactic archaeology, radio astronomy and astronomical instrumentation. However we emphasise that the positions are open to researchers in all fields of astronomy and astrophysics; we welcome applications from theorists, observers, and instrumentalists. These are primarily research positions, although teaching is also part of the role. The two faculty members will contribute to the strategic goals of RSAA through excellence in research, teaching, and other professional activities. They will drive the School’s research programs, and will win grants, supervise graduate students, and teach undergraduates.

RSAA is the leading research school in Australia in the field of astronomy and astrophysics, and has been ranked in the top-10 in the world in space science. The School has world-class staff and students, and an exceptional track record in academic publishing, teaching, and funding. The vibrant and diverse astronomical research community at RSAA has access to a broad array of facilities, including optical telescopes operated by ANU at Siding Spring Observatory (AAT 4m, ANU 2.3m, SkyMapper 1.3m, UKST 1.2m) and radio telescopes (ATCA, Parkes, ASKAP, MWA). ANU is a partner in the Giant Magellan Telescope (GMT) project and Australia is a strategic partner of the European Southern Observatory (ESO), an arrangement that provides access to all ESO telescopes at Paranal and La Silla. RSAA has access to excellent computational facilities through the National Computational Infrastructure supercomputers, as well as in-house compute clusters. RSAA develops sophisticated astronomical and space hardware in the state-of-the-art facilities at our Advanced Technology and Instrumentation Centre.

RSAA is part of ANU’s College of Science, which covers all areas of scientific endeavour. Scientists at ANU use their skills to contribute to advancing science for the future of the world, integrating high-level research and educational excellence. The College comprises: the Research School of Astronomy and Astrophysics, the Research School of Biology, the Research School of Chemistry, the Research School of Earth Science, the Fenner School of Environment and Society, the Mathematical Sciences Institute, the Research School of Physics and Engineering, and the Centre for the Public Awareness of Science. The ANU College of Science conducts research and delivers a research-led education program that encompasses the entire breadth of the sciences, supported by extensive international networks and world-class facilities. The College has a strong tradition of research excellence that has fostered distinguished Nobel Laureates and Kyoto Prize winners, and that trains scientific leaders in disciplines in which the ANU is consistently ranked in the top twenty in the world.
