Full Professor in the Area of Fundamental Physics from Strong Gravity
Radboud University Department of High-Energy Physics

At Radboud University, we do research and teach programmes covering the full width of the academic spectrum. We do this on a green, modern campus with state-of-the-art facilities. The atmosphere on campus is open and personal, which stimulates colleagues to share their knowledge beyond the boundaries of their own discipline. It encourages all to look further, to see more. Thus, Radboud University contributes to the development of new perspectives. Within science and within society. This makes Radboud University successful and of international importance.

Full Professor in the Area of Fundamental Physics from Strong Gravity (0.8 - 1.0 FTE)
Faculty of Science
Maximum salary: € 8,127 gross/month
Vacancy number: 62.64.19
Application deadline: 15 September 2019

As part of a structural broadening of its research activities in Theoretical Particle and Gravitational Physics, the Department of High-Energy Physics at Radboud University seeks to appoint a Full Professor of Fundamental Physics from Strong Gravity as soon as possible. As a full professor you are expected to establish a novel theoretical research line in the department, dedicated to investigating gravitational systems in extreme regimes and aimed at advancing our understanding of the foundations of gravity and spacetime. Expertise in relevant numerical/computational methods beyond perturbation theory will be considered an asset. Your research profile must complement existing activities in Quantum Gravity and Quantum Field Theory in a meaningful way.

Work environment
The Gravity Group of the Department currently includes 4 full-time staff members, 2 part-time staff members, and several postdoctoral researchers, PhD candidates and Master's students.
Other research lines are theoretical particle physics phenomenology and experimental high-energy physics, including participation in the ATLAS experiment and the Pierre Auger Observatory. The Department of High-Energy Physics is part of the Institute for Mathematics, Astrophysics and Particle Physics (IMAPP), which also has activities in mathematical general relativity, gravitational waves and the Event Horizon Telescope.

IMAPP provides an attractive, multidisciplinary working environment for foundational, frontline research, ranging from pure mathematics and quantum gravity to collider and astrophysics, with the ultimate aim of understanding the origin and structure of our universe. The Institute's set-up facilitates interactions across traditional boundaries between the disciplines it represents.
Radboud University offers customised facilities to better align work and private life. Parents are entitled to partly paid parental leave and Radboud employees enjoy flexibility in the way
they structure their work. This flexibility extends to the conditions of employment; some aspects can be fine-tuned to the employee's wishes. Daycare facilities for children
aged 0-4 years are available on campus, next to the faculty buildings. The Faculty of Science further offers a €50,000 premium for continued research during maternity leave.

Strategically located in Europe, Radboud University is one of the leading academic institutions in the Netherlands. It is an academic community with a personal touch, where top-flight education and research take place on a beautiful green campus, in modern buildings with state-of-the-art facilities.

What we expect from you
you are a leading international expert in strong gravity, with a substantial track record of independent, original research and with in-depth theoretical knowledge of general relativity and (quantum) field theory;
you are able to inspire and motivate others, and are excited by the opportunity to set up a new research activity in the department, engaging with your colleagues in a constructive way;
you have proven qualities as a teacher and supervisor, have clear ideas on how to teach effectively and will contribute to broadening and further developing our educational programme;
you have an engaging and open-minded attitude and are ready to contribute actively to a scientifically vibrant, productive and interactive workplace, where people respect each other and each other's ideas;
you will supervise students, do your share in organisational and management tasks at the departmental and institutional levels, and play an active part in outreach activities.

What we have to offer
employment: 0.8 - 1.0 FTE;
a maximum gross monthly salary of € 8,127 based on a 38-hour working week (salary scale H2);
in addition to the salary: an 8% holiday allowance and an 8.3% end-of-year bonus;
duration of the contract: indefinite period;
Dutch university job-ranking system (UFO): Full Professor, Level 2 (Hoogleraar 2);
if you have taken parental, maternity or care leave, this will be taken into account when evaluating the track record;
you will be able to make use of our Dual Career Service where our Dual Career Officer will assist with family related support, such as child care, and help your partner prepare for the local labour market and with finding an occupation.
