Fully-funded PhD studentship – Hyperpolarized NMR Spectroscopy

School of Chemistry

Location: Highfield Campus

Closing Date: Saturday 31 August 2019

Reference: 1092118EB

PhD Supervisor: Prof Malcolm Levitt

co supervisor: Dr Giuseppe Pileio

Hyperpolarization methods enhance nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) signals by up to 5 orders of magnitude, with transformative implications for a wide range of sciences including chemistry, biology, physics and medicine. Prof Malcolm H Levitt FRS has been awarded a 5-year grant from the European Research Council to develop molecular sensors and magnetic resonance imaging agents based on hyperpolarized NMR. A fully-funded 3.5-year PhD studentship is available under this grant. This major project is highly interdisciplinary and includes quantum theory, experimental spectroscopy, physics, chemical synthesis and biochemistry. The studentship will focus on the nuclear magnetic resonance aspects of the project but will allow close interaction with the other involved areas as well. The successful applicant will have an excellent academic record, a strong background in physical chemistry, physics or mathematics, and have a keen interest in participating in highly interdisciplinary and challenging research at the scientific frontier.

The studentship is funded for 3.5 years and welcomes applicants from the UK and EU who have or expect to obtain a first class degree in Chemistry, Physics or allied subjects/relevant disciplines. Funding will cover fees and a stipend at current research council rates of £ 14,777 per annum (201819 rates and due to increase in 201920).

Due to funding restrictions this position is only open to UK/EU applicants

Applications for a PhD in Chemistry should be submitted online at https://studentrecords.soton.ac.uk/BNNRPROD/bzsksrch.P_Search

Please ensure you select the academic session 2019-20 when making your application in the academic year field and click on the Research radio button. Enter Chemistry in the search text field

Please place Prof Levitt in the field for proposed supervisor/project.

General enquiries should be made mhl@soton.ac.uk. Any queries on the application process should be made to feps-pgr-apply@soton.ac.uk

Applications will be considered in the order that they are received, and the position will be considered filled when a suitable candidate has been identified
