Head of Mechanical Workshops University of Cambridge Department of Physics United Kingdom


We are currently recruiting for a Head of Mechanical Engineering at the Cavendish Laboratories, University of Cambridge. The role sits in the Technical Services Division giving support to the department's research and teaching activities, reporting to the Laboratory Superintendent. You will be responsible for overseeing the effective running and development of the mechanical engineering services within a leading scientific institution.


This is an exciting opportunity for a dynamic professional with engineering management experience to develop the service output to the department and wider University community.


The mechanical engineering services in the department include, the mechanical workshops, student workshop and design office. The workshops provide essential support to the research programme of the Laboratory. The work is extremely varied, requiring great creativity and ingenuity. The role is required to develop the workshop capabilities, apprentice training and provide sound cost management of the service.


The Department will be moving to a new Cavendish III building in 2023 and this role will play a key part in the workshops design and transition to the new world class £300m facility.


The successful applicant will be educated preferably to degree level in mechanical engineering with very good communication, analytical and IT skills. A full working knowledge of appropriate engineering related statutory H&S requirements. Significant experience in a R&D precision engineering environment is required, with some of this in responsible management roles including staff development and apprentice training. Management of P&L and Capital expenditure budgets, manufacture estimating and contract negotiation is desirable. Project management experience, from initial concept to delivery, including CAD, CAM and solid modelling work.
