Interdisciplinary Lectureship in Computational Modelling of Genome Organisation
University of Cambridge, Department of Chemistry
United Kingdom

The Departments of Chemistry and Genetics seek to appoint a talented and ambitious individual to a University Lectureship in computational modelling of genome organisation, to be held jointly between the two Departments. Through this appointment we aim to foster cross-disciplinary research and teaching between the two Departments. A University Lectureship is equivalent to the rank of Associate Professor in the USA and, subject to satisfactory completion of the probationary period, leads to a tenured position. The University has a merit-based promotions procedure leading to Reader and to Professor.

We are looking for a person whose research interests will extend the current profile of research in the two Departments, and in particular a person who will be able to bring together our existing strengths in soft-matter theory and genome biology.

The successful applicant will have an outstanding record of independent research in relevant areas, and will be expected to develop a vigorous, high quality and externally-funded research programme at an international level.

Candidates must demonstrate a firm commitment to teaching at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels, and will be expected to contribute to and develop courses in either or both Departments, according to their expertise.

Applicants must have a PhD degree in a relevant subject, significant post-doctoral experience, and strong evidence of research excellence. University Lecturers are expected to develop and lead their own research programmes, so must be able to demonstrate a significant degree of independence.

The successful applicant is expected to be involved with teaching within both Departments, according to their particular skills and expertise. Such teaching includes: giving lectures; demonstrating in undergraduate practical classes (which may be computer-based); acting as an examiner for undergraduate examinations. The successful applicant is also expected to supervise final year undergraduate research projects. This post is to be jointly held in the two departments: teaching and administrative duties may be required in either or both departments, but the total load will not be greater than that expected of an appointee in one of the departments.

Candidates will be expected to develop the subject of soft-matter theory integrated with an assessment of genome biology by research and other activities, and to enhance its growth as a field of scholarship. They will also be expected to develop an independent research group, and to attract external sponsorship for their research activities.

Administrative duties are shared equitably among all teaching members of the two departments. Applicants might be expected to play a significant role from time to time on Departmental and Faculty Committees, and encouraged to accept nominations to serve on University Committees.

We particularly welcome applications from women and candidates from a BME background for this vacancy as they are currently under-represented at this level in the University.
