Junior, Assistant, Associate or Full Specialist of Radio Astronomy Digital Instrumentation in Space Sciences Laboratory
University of California Berkeley
United States

DESCRIPTION

The Space Sciences Laboratory (SSL) at the University of California, Berkeley seeks applications for a full-time (100%) Junior Specialist, Assistant Specialist, Associate Specialist or Full Specialist, in the area of radio astronomy digital instrumentation, with an expected start date of May 2019.

Position Description:
The Collaboration for Astronomy Signal Processing and Electronics Research (CASPER) group at the Space Science Laboratory is seeking a highly motivated individual to further the collaboration’s work in providing open-source software and hardware resources to support the radio-astronomy research community. CASPER’s goal is to increase the re-usability of radio-astronomy DSP hardware and software and thereby lower the cost of developing astronomical instrumentation. The CASPER collaboration comprises a dozen or more core developers who contribute a variety of FPGA/GPU/CPU processing libraries and programming tools to CASPER’s open-source code repositories. These resources are used by a community of ~100 researchers worldwide to design and deploy instrumentation. While most CASPER developers are largely responsible for the design and deployment of instrumentation for specific projects, we seek a developer and researcher in Berkeley to primarily focus on supporting the core CASPER infrastructure for the larger community.

The primary responsibilities for this position are:
● Develop open-source high-level tools and libraries for FPGA-based instrumentation used in Radio Astronomy.
● Coordinate international CASPER collaborators in development of open-source software.

● Support the development, testing, and deployment of novel instrumentation within UC Berkeley’s Radio Astronomy Laboratory (RAL). These instruments may include, spectrometers, correlators, beamformers, transient-processing systems (pulsar and fast radio bursts), SETI, and other DSP systems used by single-dish and synthetic-aperture radio telescopes.
● Participate in project meetings with staff and graduate student researchers.

● Write research reports and peer-reviewed journal articles.
● Participate in the writing of proposals to seek additional research funding.

Basic Qualifications (required at the time of application):
• Bachelor’s degree (or equivalent international degree) or enrolled in Bachelor’s degree (or equivalent international degree) program

Additional Qualifications (required by the start date):
• Bachelor’s degree (or equivalent international degree)
• At least one (1) year of experience working in a research lab

Preferred Qualifications:
For appointment in Junior Specialist rank
• Bachelor’s degree (or equivalent international degree) in electrical engineering, computer science, astronomy, physics, or closely related field

For appointment in Assistant Specialist rank
• Master's degree (or equivalent international degree) in electrical engineering, computer science, astronomy, physics, or closely related field

For appointment in Associate Specialist rank
• Master's degree (or equivalent international degree) in electrical engineering, computer science, astronomy, physics, or closely related field
• Five (5) years of experience working in a research lab

For appointment in Full Specialist rank
• Master’s degree or higher (or equivalent international degree) in electrical engineering, computer science, astronomy, physics, or closely related field
• Ten (10) years of experience working in a research lab
• A substantial record of publishing, including serving as lead author on research and policy reports.

For all ranks
• Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals
• Robust analytical skills to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions
• Strong communication skills in order to write routine reports and correspondence, speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of organizations
• Demonstrated experience in high-throughput digital signal processing systems, preferably including FPGA- and GPU-based processing elements
• Demonstrated proficiency with at least 2 of: Python, C, Verilog, VHDL, CUDA
• Commitment to collaborative development of open-source software
• Experience with high-speed Ethernet networks
• Experience in high-level design of radio-astronomy instrumentation
• Familiarity with MATLAB & Simulink
• Familiarity with the previous work of the Collaboration for Astronomy Signal Processing and Electronics Research
• Demonstrated proficiencies with hardware description languages applied to Field Programmable Gate Arrays (FPGAs)

Starting salary based on appointed rank and step will be commensurate with experience.
Initial appointment will be for two (2) years, with the possibility of renewal based on performance and availability of funding.
