Applications for the post are welcome in any research areas in biogeoscience, including organic geochemistry, biogeochemistry, geobiology, and environmental geochemistry that complement the existing strengths within the School. The post-holder will develop, lead and sustain research of international standard in biogeoscience, contribute to teaching, assessment, project supervision and curriculum design at undergraduate and postgraduate levels; and participate in School management and organisation. 

The School has an outstanding reputation in Earth Systems research and is keen to continue expanding its research and teaching in the area of biogeoscience. We are seeking discipline-bridging applicants who can address modern challenges ranging from climate change, sustainability, environmental degradation, and resource recovery.

The successful applicant will be a member of the vibrant Earth Systems Research Group (ESRG) within the School of Geographical and Earth Sciences (GES). The ESRG has 25 academic staff, and its research is organised into three themes; (1) Life’s Interactions with Dynamic Environments; (2) Global Landscapes; and (3) Dynamic Earth and Planetary Evolution. These themes focus on i) understanding how critical thresholds in changing environments affect fundamental interactions with the atmosphere and hydrosphere on land and in aqueous systems; ii) quantitative understanding of Earth and planetary materials to elucidate mechanisms, drivers, and timescales of dynamic processes within our Solar System; and iii) understanding and modelling how Earth’s surface evolves spatially and temporally through interactions with the atmosphere, biosphere, and hydrosphere to influence processes that sustain life. Together, these themes support our vision to enhance understanding and communication of Earth systems research in support of sustainable and healthy environments.

Job Purpose

To carry out research and scholarship in biogeoscience, deliver an excellent student experience through teaching and assessment, and contribute to management and administration. At Grade 8 and 9, demonstrate leadership and contribute to academic and strategic management.

Main Duties and Responsibilities

Perform the following range of activities:

1. Develop, lead and sustain personal and group research aligned appropriately to School/College research strategy. 

2. Enhance your research profile, reputation and esteem through:
- Establishing and sustaining a track record of independent and joint publications of international quality in high quality refereed journals, generating research impact in terms of economic/societal benefit;
- Presentation at international and national conferences and at internal/external seminars, colloquia and workshops;
- Identification of potential funding sources and the development of proposals to secure funding from internal/external bodies to support future research;
- Developing and maintaining collaborations with colleagues across the School/College/University and external Academic and Industrial Partners;
- Contribution to team/group meetings/seminars/workshops and activities to enhance the wider knowledge, outputs and culture of the School/College.

3. Contribute to the planning, organisation and delivery of high quality teaching, supervision and assessment activities across under/post-graduate programmes within the Subject/School.

4. Contribute to the on-going development and design of under/post-graduate curricula, to ensure a research-led approach to student learning and assessment in the discipline and/or profession.

5. Manage a variety of academic administrative activities, including timely delivery of effective and constructive feedback on assessment, and provision of pastoral support.

6. Contribute to the management and organisational duties of the School, as assigned by the Head of School.

7. Engage in personal, professional and career development.

Knowledge, Qualifications, Skills and Experience


A1 Relevant PhD or equivalent experience within biogeoscience, geoscience, environmental science, or a cognate discipline 
A2 Significant breadth/depth of knowledge in biogeoscience, as applied to paleoclimate, environmental or resource application areas 
A3 A growing international reputation, evidenced by esteem indicators, in a field that matches or enhances existing activities within the Earth Systems Research Group of the School of Geographical and Earth Sciences.

E5 Strong track record of undertaking research, publishing in high impact journals at national and international level, and in attracting external research funding

Job Features


Typical Performance Standard:

For Lecturer:

Design and lecture on equivalent of 30 credits in undergraduate or postgraduate programmes; carry normal project supervision load.
Two 3* or more REF quality papers per annum (portfolio with minimum of four 3* papers in most recent 6 year period), with the potential that one or more could meet the 4* REF criteria Apply for external research funding on average twice per year PGR supervision equal to Russell Group median Consistently hold a portfolio of funding as PI sufficient to support at least one PDRA.

The School of Geographical and Earth Sciences (GES) is one of seven schools in the College of Science and Engineering. GES has 35 FTE academic staff, 16 FTE professional staff and ~600 FTE students. It delivers three undergraduate programmes (Earth Science, Geology, Geography) and six taught postgraduate programmes. Research is organised into two groups, Earth Systems (ESRG) and Human Geography (HGRG), and a graduate school with ~50 FTE MSc and PhD students. GES has close links with the Scottish Universities Environmental Research Centre (SUERC), and the School of Interdisciplinary Studies in Dumfries. GES made two submissions to REF2014, one from ESRG plus SUERC, and the other from the HGRG, both of which were highly rated. Standard Terms & Conditions


Salary will be on the University’s Research and Teaching Grade, level 7 / 8 - £35,210 - £39,610 / £43,266- £50,132 per annum.

This is a full time, open ended post.

The successful applicant of this post will be enrolled onto the University’s Early Career Development Programme (ECDP). This will provide for you as an early career academic staff member to be developed and supported over a specified timeframe to facilitate the advancement of your academic career.
