The College of Creative Studies (CCS) at the University of California, Santa Barbara invites applications for a temporary lecturer to teach general chemistry courses in the fall and winter quarters of the 2020-21 academic year. This is a non-tenure track, non-ladder, non-academic senate position. Ideally, one lecturer will be appointed to the position to teach in both Fall and Winter Quarters at 33%. The service period begin date for Fall Quarter is September 27, 2020. The service period begin date for Winter Quarter is January 4, 2021. This appointment is for academic year 2020-21 only, with the possibility of reappointment in future years being dependent upon program needs and job performance. Salary is based on UC’s salary scales and depends upon qualifications.

Duties include teaching courses that focus on the curriculum set out in the general chemistry series. The Fall Quarter course covers the atomic structure of matter; gases; quantum chemistry and the electronic structure of atoms; introduction to chemical bonding; molecular shape and electronic structure of molecules. The Winter Quarter course covers equilibrium; acid-base chemistry; thermodynamics; and electrochemistry.

At a minimum, applicants are expected to have completed all requirements for a PhD in Chemistry, Biochemistry or Materials Science except the dissertation at the time of application. Completion of all requirements for a PhD in Chemistry, Biochemistry or Materials Science is required by the start date of the position. Two or more years of classroom teaching experience (not as a TA) and strong interpersonal skills are preferred.
