Role Description

In recognition of the growing importance of quantum technologies, in 2014 York established the York Centre for Quantum Technologies (YCQT). This is, by the nature of the area, an interdisciplinary centre that includes activities in the departments of Computer Science, Electronic Engineering, Mathematics and Physics. The YCQT provides a framework for interdisciplinary collaboration and projects, is a key component of the York Research Theme “Technologies for the future”, and has positioned York as a leading centre for quantum technologies.

The new Lecturer in Experimental Quantum Communications will be appointed into the YCQT. Dependent upon the preferences and research portfolio of the appointee, the potential for collaborations (experimental and theoretical) with current York staff, and laboratory requirements, the Lecturer could be based in one of the departments associated to the YCQT or possibly be a joint appointment. Applications from motivated and enthusiastic researchers with experience in any areas of experimental quantum communications are welcome.

The successful candidate will be a dynamic researcher with a proven track record of publications and project outputs. We welcome applications from candidates with research interests in any areas of experimental quantum communications. Given the evolving landscape of academic research in this sector, applications in growth areas are particularly encouraged. Examples include, but are not restricted to: discrete and continuous variable quantum key distribution (QKD), with novel or entangled states of light; advanced quantum networking; device-independent, measurement-device-independent and twin-field QKD; communication technologies and applications beyond QKD; quantum communications in space. Broader fields such as quantum sensing, quantum metrology, quantum computing and materials, e.g. quantum dots, can be considered if accompanied by an experimental background and a clear overlap with quantum communications.

The appointee will be expected to contribute significantly to the new experimental activity in quantum communications at York. The appointee will also be expected to secure research funding from a range of sources and with particular consideration for the evolving national and international funding environment in the quantum technologies area. The successful candidate will also be expected to take on teaching and administrative responsibilities commensurate with the position, and to be able to demonstrate the ability to carry out these activities to a high standard.

Skills, Experience & Qualification needed

  • PhD relevant to experimental quantum communications
  • Specialist knowledge in quantum communications
  • Knowledge of a range of research and teaching techniques
  • Ability to develop research objectives, projects and proposals
  • Ability to extend, transform, and apply knowledge from scholarship
  • Ability to supervise the work of others, for example in research teams or projects or as an MSc PhD or postdoctoral supervisor
  • Evidence of dissemination of research findings

Interview date: 7 July 2021

For informal enquiries: Prof Marco Lucamarini, Chair of Experimental Quantum Communications (marco.lucamarini@york.ac.uk); or Prof Sarah Thompson, Associate Dean for Research, Faculty of Science (sarah.thompson@york.ac.uk)
