About the team

The UWA School of Agriculture and Environment is a School with a commitment to quality teaching and high impact research . It spans the broad disciplines of Agricultural and Resource Economics, Agricultural Science, Environmental Science and Geography and Planning.

The School is surrounded by a wealth of agricultural, natural and mining resources. Our teaching and research benefit from a network of national and international collaborators, and we have a strong track record in PhD supervision and external research grant success. Teaching and Research is translated into practice and policy through our strong industry and government links in areas related to agricultural and environmental management, and regional development. The School is a major partner in the UWA Institute of Agriculture. UWA has a proud history of industry engagement in the development and release of improved crop and pasture varieties and currently has strong industry engagement in canola breeding through NPZ and annual pasture legume breeding through DLF Seeds.

About the opportunity

In this position you will undertake independent teaching and research in the areas of quantitative genetics, crop/pasture molecular genetics and crop/pasture breeding. Key responsibilities will include teaching at Undergraduate and Masters level, supervising Honours, Masters and PhD research students, and developing collaborations with researchers within and outside the UWA School of Agriculture and Environment and in industry.        

You will also be expected to lead new initiatives in teaching, assemble research teams to attract funding from national/international funding agencies, engage with industry, publish high quality papers in leading journals,  and actively contribute to governance and collegial life within the School, across the University and outside the University.

To be considered for this role, you will have:

Level B

  • A PhD qualification relevant to the discipline or other higher professional qualifications appropriate to the discipline
  • Demonstrated skills in quantitative genetics, molecular breeding, and genomics that can be applied to pre-breeding or breeding of crops and/or pastures
  • Experience in one or more of the following: biometry, statistical principles of experimental designs, ‘big data’, bioinformatics, or field-based high-throughput phenotyping
  • Have a good track record in delivering high quality teaching in the relevant discipline with a commitment to mentoring and developing innovative student-centred curricula and contributing to inclusive student learning experiences
  • Extensive experience in applied and basic research, including a good understanding of broadacre agricultural systems in temperate climates
  • Evidence of original research initiatives (e.g., research funding applications and awards) and peer-reviewed publications in leading journals in relevant disciplines, achievement relative to opportunity
  • Have a substantiated collegial attitude and evidence of effective teamwork, leadership and mentoring skills with diverse groups of colleagues
  • Demonstrated experience in supervision or co-supervision of postgraduate students in research projects/dissertations
  • Demonstrated strong interpersonal and verbal and written communication skills, particularly in liaison with university colleagues, and/or government or industry as relevant       

Level C

  • A PhD qualification relevant to the discipline or other higher professional qualifications appropriate to the discipline
  • Demonstrated skills in quantitative genetics, molecular breeding, and genomics that can be applied to pre-breeding or breeding of crops and/or pastures

  • Demonstrated evidence of strong track record in the supervision, including as lead supervisor, of postgraduate students in research projects/dissertations
  • Demonstrated strong interpersonal and verbal and written communication skills, particularly in liaison with university colleagues, and/or government or industry as relevant
