Position OverviewThe University of Chicago, Division of the Social Sciences is searching for a Part-Time Lecturer in the Committee on Environment, Geography and Urbanization (CEGU) to teach in the 2027 Winter Quarter. The appointee will teach one section of Global Environmental Change, a CEGU foundations course in environmental science/critical physical geography. The appointee is expected to design their own course syllabus in consultation with CEGU’s Director of Undergraduate Studies. The course will be taught on the Hyde Park Campus, twice a week at a day and time that fits both the lecturer’s and program’s schedule. This is a part time, non-benefits eligible position. The appointment may be renewed depending on funding and programmatic need. The course considers the genealogy of environmental transformations that shape structural inequalities in society and introduces students to the major elements of earth system science and the study of global land-use change, with particular attention to key theoretical paradigms, methodological approaches, and forms of environmental and spatial data. Instructors for this course will have expertise and teaching experience in environmental or earth science, physical geography, or related fields with attention to socio-environmental relationships. Based in the Division of Social Sciences at the University of Chicago, the Committee on Environment, Geography and Urbanization (CEGU) is an interdisciplinary platform for critical thinking, advanced research, and innovative pedagogy on the societal and spatial dimensions of climate change, biodiversity loss, and other kinds of environmental transformation. CEGU seeks to investigate and respond to the environmental challenges of our time not only through research and pedagogy on climate change but also by actively centering contemporary planetary environmental emergencies in all aspects of social research and humanistic inquiry. Key fields of research and pedagogy include urban environmental studies and sustainable urbanism; energy histories and geographies; environmental humanities; spatial and environmental media; and environmental policy, design and practice. CEGU houses the undergraduate major and minor, a new MA certificate, and a Ph.D. certificate in Environment, Geography and Urbanization.
