Description

The College of Chemistry at the University of California-Berkeley is generating an applicant pool of part‐time or full‐time qualified lecturers to teach graduate courses for the Master of Molecular Science and Software Engineering (MSSE) Program should an opening arise. MSSE is a unique program that provides critical thinkers with the practical skills needed to develop sophisticated computational models to solve large-scale challenges. Our degree provides the formal preparation in basic computational science practices, from algorithms to software to hardware that is usually missing from the undergraduate or graduate curriculum. Our program integrates numerical approaches to solving complex problems with software best practices to enable students to become effective scientific and engineering leaders. Our students graduate with the abilities to translate highly sophisticated theory, models, algorithms, and data analytics into software frameworks that others can use or build upon.

We are seeking dynamic lecturers with a commitment to graduate education in computational science, data science, and software engineering to lead multiple courses each year. The pool will remain in place for one year; those interested in remaining in the pool beyond that time must reapply. Screening of applicants begins immediately and will continue as needed; some appointments may begin in the fall 2020 semester. Positions range from 25% to 100%. The number of positions varies from semester to semester, depending on the needs of the College and program. Positions typically start prior to the beginning of the semester, and appointments may be renewable based on need, funding, and performance.

General Duties:

Classroom teaching and preparation, managing and mentoring graders and/or graduate student instructors (teaching assistants), holding office hours, assigning grades, advising students, preparing course materials (e.g., syllabus), and using Cal’s electronic resources for course management.

Basic qualifications:

Completion of all Ph.D., or equivalent international degree, requirements, or have degree candidate status at the time of application.

Additional qualifications:

A Ph.D., or equivalent international degree, and authorization to work in the U.S. is required by the start date of the appointment.

Preferred qualifications:

Prior teaching experience in computational science, data science, and/or software engineering is preferred.

The College of Chemistry and the MSSE Program is interested in candidates who will contribute to diversity and equal opportunity in higher education through their teaching.

Application materials should be submitted electronically through our web-based system at: https://aprecruit.berkeley.edu/JPF02491.

We will only contact references for the finalists. All letters will be treated as confidential per University of California policy and California state law. Please refer potential referees, including when letters are provided via a third party (i.e., dossier service or career center), to the UC Berkeley statement of confidentiality (apo.berkeley.edu/ucb-confidentiality-policy) prior to submitting their letters.

The posting will remain open through January 2021 to accommodate upcoming course needs and new applicants. The pool will close in January 2021; if you would like to remain in the pool after that time you will need to submit a new application. Please direct questions to Suzanne Sutton at suttons@berkeley.edu.

Please note that the use of a lecturer pool does not guarantee that an open position exists. See the review date specified in AP Recruit to learn whether the College is currently reviewing applications for a specific position. If there is no future review date specified, your application may not be considered at this time.

UC lecturers are academic appointees and are represented by an exclusive bargaining agent, University Council – American Federation of Teachers (UC-AFT). This position is represented by the bargaining unit.
