The Geography and Spatial Sciences discipline within the School of Technology, Environments and Design integrates human geography, physical geography, spatial sciences, planning and environmental management research and teaching to advance the University’s strategic pursuit of addressing the challenges that arise at the intersection of science and society. The Surveying and Spatial Sciences group are the top ranked ‘Geomatic Engineering’ researchers in Australia, making substantial contributions across diverse disciplines including Physical Geography, Geophysics, Climate, Ecology and Oceanography. We are also a global top-100 ranked University for Remote Sensing.

The Opportunity

We are seeking to appoint a Lecturer/Senior Lecturer in Spatial Sciences within the discipline of Geography of Spatial Sciences. This is an exciting opportunity for an individual to further develop their academic career in a vibrant and highly collegial group.

The successful applicant for this position will contribute to the research activities of Geography and Spatial Sciences, undertake supervision of research higher degree candidates and have a significant role in the coordination and teaching of relevant undergraduate and postgraduate units in the spatial sciences. Applications are particularly invited from individuals with research and teaching interests in the fields of GIS and advanced geospatial data analysis.

We particularly encourage applicants who have interests in either the development of advanced geospatial techniques themselves or also the application of those techniques in areas of strength within our discipline, such as climate risk, landscape-scale conservation, resilient socio-ecological systems or earth observation, or across the University, such as ecology, Antarctic, marine, bushfire or health. The teaching component of the role is envisaged to focus mainly on GIS and geospatial analysis.

This is a balanced academic role with teaching, research and service roles. We are looking for someone to commence in early 2021 ideally. A part-time appointment will also be considered.

Key Accountabilities:

  • Make an effective/strong and sustained contribution to the University in achieving its strategic objectives and fulfilling its operational responsibilities.
  • Undertake high-quality research of national and increasingly of international standing, secure external competitive and other funding, publish research findings and contribute to the successful supervision of research higher degree students, in order to meet and regularly exceed the University’s research performance expectations for Level B/Level C.
  • Undertake scholarly undergraduate and postgraduate coursework teaching of a high/exemplary quality.
  • Contribute to the development and maintenance of productive and effective links inside the University and locally and nationally with the discipline, relevant interdisciplinary domains, profession, industry and/or wider community.
  • Increasingly provide academic leadership, particularly in fostering outstanding research and/or learning and teaching.

Your Application

To be successful in the role, your application will need to demonstrate;

  • A PhD or equivalent in the Spatial Sciences or a closely related field. An undergraduate degree in Surveying or Geomatics is desirable but not essential.
  • Relative to opportunity, a strong record in, and continuing commitment to, research that has achieved national and preferably international recognition and made notable contributions to the fields of GIS and advanced geospatial data analysis demonstrated by a record of high-quality publications, presentations at conferences and success in securing external competitive and other funding.
  • Experience and demonstrated achievement in University-level teaching and learning.
  • A record of effective contributions to successful research higher degree supervision and completions.


Appointment to this role will be offered at either Academic Level B or Academic Level C.

Academic Level B - Appointment to this role will be at Academic Level B and will have a total remuneration package of up to $133,842 comprising base salary within the range of $98,537 to $114,395 plus 17% superannuation.

Academic Level C - Appointment to this role will be at Academic Level C and will have a total remuneration package of up to $158,046 comprising base salary within the range of $118,946 to $135,082 plus 17% superannuation.
