Two Early-Stage Researcher (3-year PhD) positions in computational and theoretical Photonics

 

Starting salary: £32,750 (inclusive of pension)/£37,750 (exclusive of pension)
Mobility annual payment: £4,866.84
Family annual payment: £2,077.25 (if eligible)

 

We are pleased to advertise two early-stage researcher positions to begin between 18 March 2019 and 31 July 2019, as a part of the Innovative Training Network of the European Commission MICROCOMB "Applications and Fundamentals of Microresonator Frequency Combs".

 

These are fully-funded contracts of employment, with a requirement that successful candidates register for a PhD.

 

The positions will last three years, and will require that researchers register for a PhD programme at Bath. Researchers will be a part of a pan-European research and training programme comprising international schools, workshops, and secondments to academic and industrial partners across Europe. 

 

Projects available at Bath are computational and theoretical projects on modelling of frequency combs, optical solitons and other nonlinear effects in microresonators with Kerr and quadratic nonlinearities. We are looking for either the top class master level students or researchers at the early stage of their careers and not yet awarded a PhD, that have strong background in one of the following fields -- Physics (theoretical, experimental, computational), Photonics, or Applied Mathematics. Applicants should be willing and able to work as a part of a team in Bath and within the consortium, to collaborate closely with experimental partners and will require to attend an extensive programme of training events.

 

The consortium comprises some of the leading European academic and industrial centres working in the area of optical frequency combs in optical microresonators (microcombs). The network allows us to combine and share some of the world leading experience and expertise in photonics in general and in microcombs in particular and train a new generation of scientists in this actively developing area bordering physics and photonic engineering and having pronounced applied and fundamental dimensions. The frequency comb research itself is the Nobel prize winning area (T. Hänsch and J. Hall, 2005), while the microcombs can qualify as an emerging disruptive technology.  

 

The University of Bath is a campus University overlooking the World Heritage City of Bath. Facilities are outstanding and working conditions excellent.

 

Applicants may be from anywhere in the world, but must not have resided, or carried out their main activity (work or studies), in the UK for more than 12 months in the 3 years prior.

 

Applicants must:

  • comply with the EU definition of Early Stage Researchers (specifically, not having previously been awarded a doctoral degree);
  • be in possession of, or be expected to be awarded prior to commencement of the Fellowship, a masters level (four year) degree, or equivalent experience following a three year degree:
    • in the following fields: Physics (theoretical, experimental, computational), Photonics or Applied Mathematics
    • at a level of a first or upper second class grade, or equivalent; and
    • meet the English language requirements of the University of Bath Doctoral College (currently a minimum IELTS score of 6.5, with at least 6.0 in each of the four components).
