Chapman University’s Schmid College of Science and Technology seeks applications for a part-time chemistry lecturer who has the ability to teach undergraduate students, beginning August 2019. CHEM 101: Chemistry of Life is taken by non-science majors to fulfill the General Education Natural Inquiry requirement.

• A Ph.D. or M.S. degree in chemistry related to organic chemistry/biochemistry area is required.

• University or community college teaching experience, specifically with general, organic, biochemistry lower division general education courses.

• Ability to communicate clearly and effectively orally and in writing.

• Knowledge of computer assisted learning strategies in chemistry.

• Strong commitment to student learning, quality teaching and academic excellence.

• Ability to motivate and teach students of diverse learning styles and backgrounds.

The Lecturer will teach two 75-minute lectures per week throughout the semester, instructing and guiding students on concepts of organic chemistry and biochemistry with immediate application to students’ everyday lives with a local and global perspective. Topics include the chemical principles behind the molecular components of the human body, the oxygen-containing organic compounds we drink, taste and smell, fossil fuel power sources, human energy sources carbohydrates, fats and oils, and other chemicals in our bodies and environment (vitamins, hormones, pesticides, food additives, clothing polymers). Responsibilities each week include preparing lectures, homework, quizzes, and exams, and grade all assignments submitted by the students. The lecturer will hold one office hour per week. The CHEM 101: Chemistry of Life section time is Tuesday/Thursday 1:00-2:15pm. The lecturer must be available for orientation at the beginning of the semester.
