PhD fellowship in Medicinal Chemistry/Radiochemistry at the Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences University of Copenhagen Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences Denmark

Department of Drug Design and Pharmacology is offering a three-year PhD fellowship in Medicinal Chemistry/Radiochemistry. The PhD fellowship is financed by the Danish Research Council. The fellowship is available from 15 October 2019 or as soon as possible thereafter.

Project description
g-Hydroxybutyric acid (GHB) is a naturally occurring compound in the mammalian brain. Already in 1982 it was reported that GHB binds with high affinity to a specific protein in the forebrain, but the molecular identity and functional relevance of this binding site has remained elusive. However, we have recently identified a GHB high-affinity target, which constitute a potential biomarker for PET imaging.  The aim of this PhD project is to identify small-molecule candidates and develop suitable PET radiotracers by targeting the newly identified binding sites. Availability of such tools will enable early diagnose and optimal therapeutic intervention in implicated disease states.

The tasks during this project will thus include ligand design, chemical synthesis, radiochemistry and characterization of target compounds.
