PhD position in the domain of the Chemical imaging of pigment transformation processes in art objects

Your assignment

  • You prepare a doctoral dissertation in the domain of the (3D) Imaging of chemical transformation processes in heterogeneous materials, more specifically the degradation of inorganic pigments in artists’ paints and related materials. This is done on the basis of a combination of different non-invasive imaging methods, many of which are based on X-rays.

  • You publish scientific articles related to the research project on which the appointment is made.

  • You use various measurement techniques for analyzing artist materials and artworks and combine the results of several of these methods. State-of-the-art 2D and 3D methods and instruments are present in the AXES research group and at synchrotron facilities. You use and improve (via programming) relevant algorithms for processing and combination of the different types of spectral and image data.

  • You take on limited tasks of teaching and research support in the context of analytical chemistry courses.

Your profile

  • You hold a master’s degree in Industrial or Civil Engineering, Physics or Chemistry, or equivalent.

  • Your research quality is in line with the University Policy.

  • You are quality-oriented, conscientious, creative and collaborative.

  • You function well in a team, as well as show your own initiative.

  • You have good communicative skills, both written and oral. You speak and write fluent English.

  • Programming experience is recommended.

We offer

  • a PhD scholarship (gross monthly amount from € 2.373,36 - € 2.516,73) for a total period of four years; an annual evaluation of the progress made will take place. Funding is available for the development of technical and personal skills and for participation in international congresses;

  • a dynamic and stimulating work environment with state-of-the-art instrumentation and computing facilities;

  • the contract can start immediately. The effective start date will be determined in consultation with the selected candidate.
