Remuneration: Successful applicants will receive $27,353 p.a. as a full-time stipend (pro-rata). PhD project

Recently, site-selective catalytic methods to transform simple sugars have been developed. These reactions use photoredox catalysts and visible light to promote carbon-carbon bond formation. The reaction mechanism is proposed to occur through the coupling of two different radical reactions. 


This PhD project will investigate the reaction mechanism, to identify the structure and nature of various intermediates and in particular how various radical species and organometallic complexes interact. Based on this insight you will design and establish new site-selective synthetic reactions of more complex sugars.


Applicants must have completed, or be soon to complete, a relevant chemistry degree (Honours/Master degree) at a high level (HD1 or 2.1 minimum or equivalent). 


The ability to work in a laboratory safely both independently and in a team environment are essential. Suitable candidates will have good written and verbal communication skills and a strong interest in synthetic green chemistry and/or organometallic chemistry. Evidence of skills in physical-organic reaction analysis, or handling and characterising sensitive compounds is desirable.
