PhD Position in Organic Chemistry
University of Heidelberg
Germany

Ph.D. candidate

The Institute of Organic Chemistry at the Heidelberg University is offering the position of a

Ph.D. candidate

starting in May 2020. The salary is in accordance with the German public service salary scale (50% E13 TV-L) for up to three years. This post is designed to serve in fostering young researchers and scientists and give the successful applicants the opportunity to pursue a doctoral degree.

Your duties

The project “The WW-domain scaffold as a model system for the de novo design of miniaturized phosphate receptors, phosphatases and sulfatases” lies on the interface of bioorganic chemistry and biochemistry. Your tasks will include the design of biomimetic systems in order to study biological processes such as biocatalysis on a simplified level. Besides organic synthesis and peptide chemistry you will use biophysical methods - UV spectroscopy, fluorescence spectroscopy, CD spectroscopy, electron microscopy and fluorescence microscopy - as well as develop new biophysical and biochemical assays to study the properties of the designed systems. Simple computational peptide design will be applied to refine designed peptide scaffolds.

Your profile

Suitable candidates should hold a very good M.Sc. degree (or equivalent) in chemistry, biochemistry, biomaterials science or related fields. A strong background in organic synthesis and/or peptide chemistry as well as experience in the abovementioned biophysical methods is of advantage. You should be highly motivated to work on an interdisciplinary research project, which will also involve collaboration with other scientists. Furthermore, you should be able to work independently as well as in a team and you should possess excellent presentation skills in oral and written means. Fluency in written and spoken English is therefore expected and good German proficiencies are desired.

For further information, please contact Jun.-Prof. Dr. Franziska Thomas. Applications including cover letter, CV, academic certificates, transcript of records and contact information of references should be submitted as one pdf file in electronic form to franziska.thomas@oci.uni-heidelberg.de until 28.03.2020.
