The research area of the group headed by Dr. Vitali Zhaunerchyk is gas-phase spectroscopy of relatively large molecules using X-ray and mid/far-IR light sources such free electron lasers, synchrotrons and table-top lasers. Apart from experimental measurements, the group also performs quantum chemical calculations to interpret experimentally measured spectra. The group collaborates with many researchers locally, nationally and internationally.

Job assignments

The first part of the PhD project will include development of a high-vacuum experimental chamber comprising a laser-desorption molecular beam source, vaccum pumps and a reflectron-type mass spectrometer. The facility is envisaged for mid-IR spectroscopy of gas-phase peptides and molecular aggregates using table-top IR lasers. The second part will make use of this facility in combination with IR lasers available at group’s disposal to investigate conformational landscapes of peptides depending on peptide’s length and sequence. The project will also include theoretical analysis of experimental data employing quantum chemical methods. Apart from performing experiments locally, experimental studies will also be conducted abroad utilizing IR free electron lasers.

The PhD will have a possibility for teaching duties constituting maximum 20 % of the full time. However, such a possibility strongly depends on availability of teaching tasks at the department.

Eligibility

To be eligible for third-cycle studies, the applicant must meet both the general and specific entry requirements:

A person meets the general entry requirements for third-cycle courses and study programs if he or she:
1. has been awarded a second-cycle qualification,
2. has satisfied the requirements for courses comprising at least 240 credits of which at least 60 credits were awarded in the second-cycle, or
3. has acquired substantially equivalent knowledge in some other way in Sweden or abroad.

To meet the specific entry requirements for third-cycle studies, applicants must: (i) have a second-cycle (advanced-level) degree in a relevant* subject area in the natural sciences, or (ii) have completed studies for at least 60 higher education credits at a second-cycle level in relevant subject areas in the natural sciences, or (iii) have completed a corresponding programme of relevance to the planned third-cycle programme, in Sweden or in another country, or have equivalent qualifications.

The specific entry requirements also include an acceptable command of spoken and written English. Guidelines for assessing English proficiency may include a minimum score of 550 on the TOEFL test (or 213 on the TOEFL-CBT, or 79 on the TOEFL-iBT).

Assessment

Regulations for the evaluation of qualifications for education on a doctoral level are given in SFS 1993:100.

Candidates will be assessed based on the following criteria:

  1. Experience with IR spectroscopy of gas-phase molecules;
  2. Skills in experimental physics and development of experimental facilities;
  3. Scientific publications.

Employment

A new employment as a PhD student applies for a maximum of one year. The employment may be prolonged for up to two years at a time. The total employment period may not be longer than the equivalent of four years of full time doctoral studies.
