PhD position in Process Safety Technology at the Department of Physics and Technology University of Bergen Department of Physics and Technology Norway

University of Bergen (UiB) has a vacancy for a PhD position in process safety technology (energy-related safety technology) at the Department of Physics and Technology (IFT). The position is for a fixed-term period of four (4) years.

 

About the PhD project/work tasks

The PhD project involves an experimental investigation of the effect of solid suppressants on premixed flames, with an aim to support the development of industrial explosion mitigation and explosion suppression systems. One part of the project will entail the construction and use of a multi-fuel burner where solid particles can be suspended in the gaseous fuel-air mixture that enters the flame zone. It is also relevant to investigate flame propagation under constant volume conditions, either in existing experimental facilities at IFT or as part of a research stay abroad. The experimental investigations will focus on hydrogen-air mixtures and conventional hydrocarbons such as methane and propane.

Background: Laboratory and large-scale experiments conducted over the last decade have demonstrated that flame inhibitors injected into flammable hydrocarbon-air clouds can mitigate the consequences of vapour cloud explosions. Systems consisting of gas detectors and flame inhibitor injection units are currently being installed in the process industry. Kinetic modelling suggests that flame inhibitors should be able to limit the consequences of hydrogen explosions as well, and thereby facilitate safe implementation of hydrogen as a sustainable energy carrier in society. However, initial experiments performed with very fine particles of a solid flame inhibitor (potassium carbonate) show very limited effect. A possible explanation can be the high burning rate of hydrogen, and hence the limited time available for the inhibitor particles to melt/evaporate/decompose and then interact chemically with the radicals in the flame front. The multi-fuel burner and other experimental configurations will allow researchers to explore the phenomena involved in more detail.

Skills/Qualifications

  • Applicants must hold a master's degree or the equivalent in physics, chemical engineering, chemical physics, physical chemistry, process safety technology or related topics.
  • Applicants that have submitted the master’s thesis for assessment prior to the application deadline will also be considered. It is a condition of employment that the master's degree has been awarded.
  • Hands-on experience from experimental investigations of flames and combustion phenomena is a requirement.
  • Experience from construction of experimental equipment and related infrastructure is an advantage but not a prerequisite.
  • Experience with the use of chemical kinetics software, such as CHEMKIN, CANTERA or COSILAB, is an advantage but not a prerequisite.
  • Experience with image processing in MATLAB or similar software is an advantage but not a prerequisite.
  • Applicants must be able to work independently and in a structured manner, and demonstrate good collaborative skills.
  • Applicants must be proficient in both written and oral English.
  • Good command of the Norwegian language is an advantage but not a prerequisite.
