Project description:

Chemical reactions that proceed with the exchange of electrons between reagents/reactants, i.e. oxidation and reduction, lend themselves to electrochemical control on a macroscopic scale. Electrochemical nanoprobes have been developed that can precisely control their position relative to a surface and be loaded with molecules, the flux of which can be precisely controlled using an electric field. This frontier of electrochemistry will be combined with frontiers in synthesis (nanoscale, spatial/temporal control, external stimuli) by employing electrochemical nanoprobes as reaction vessels to simultaneously control the location and progress of reactions at surfaces/interfaces. Specifically, through this project we will look to build on preliminary data (Chem. Commun. 2016, 52, 9929 – 9932) to translate electrochemically-mediated atom transfer radical polymerisation to the nanoscale with a view to controlling reaction coordinates and dynamics using electrochemistry. The targeted materials will be thoroughly characterised to determine their dimensional, compositional and morphological fidelity at the nanoscale.

Applicants should have an honours degree (at least II.1 or equivalent) in chemistry, materials science or other relevant discipline, and should be an EU/UK citizen. None EU/UK nationals are well to apply but will need to find additional funding to cover the fees for international students (Band 2 Postgraduate Research Fees;
