PhD Stipend in Overexpression and Optimization of Fungal-Quinones for Redox Flow Batteries Aalborg University, Faculty of Engineering and Science, Department of Chemistry and Bioscience Denmark



At the Faculty of Engineering and Science, Department of Chemistry and Bioscience, a PhD stipend is available within the research programme of Biotechnology, Chemistry and Environmental Engineering. The stipend is open for appointment from 1 June 2019 or soon hereafter. The Department consists of five sections of which three are located in Aalborg with research and teaching in Biotechnology, Chemistry, Biology and Environmental Science, one in Copenhagen on Sustainable Biotechnology and one in Esbjerg on Chemical Engineering. Place of employment for this position is Section of Biotechnology in Aalborg.




In Section of Biotechnology, within the research group fungal biotechnology, a PhD stipend is available with the provisional title “Overexpression and optimization of fungal-quinones for redox flow batteries”. The stipend is offered as part of the research project “Fungal Batteries for Storing Sustainable Energy” funded by the Novo Nordisk Foundation (Denmark). Close collaboration with partners off campus will be an integrated part of the project.


As the title implies, the PhD project concerns research in genetic enhancement of the quinone production in native hosts, and will target the internal regulators responsible for activation of genes governing quinone synthesis. The biosynthetic genes responsible for synthesis are usually found in gene clusters regulated by a single promotor region. Typically, a constitutive promoter will be recombinantly introduced in front of the regulators, which will allow quinone production under any condition. Several advanced molecular biology techniques will be employed such as CRISPR-Cas9, USER-Cloning, transformation of fungi and sequencing of fungal genomes as well as analytical analyzes of secondary metabolites.


Applicants must have Master of Science (MSc.) or a similar degree in Biotechnology, Biochemistry, Chemical Engineering, Chemistry, or similar from an internationally recognized University with practical research experience within one or more of the following:

  • Practical experience with culturing fungi

  • Practical experience with next generation sequencing

  • Practical experience with DNA purification and cloning

  • Good collaboration skills, team spirit and the ability to work independently

  • An excellent level of both spoken and written English to accommodate scientific communication and dissemination

PhD stipends are allocated to individuals who hold a Master's Degree. PhD stipends are normally for a period of 3 years. It is a prerequisite for allocation of the stipend that the candidate will be enrolled as a PhD fellow at the Doctoral School of Engineering and Science in accordance with the regulations of Ministerial Order No. 1039 of August 27, 2013 on the PhD Programme at the Universities and Certain Higher Artistic Educational Institutions. According to the Ministerial Order the progress of the PhD fellow shall be assessed every six months. It is a prerequisite for continuation of salary payment that the previous progress is approved at the time of the evaluation.

The qualifications of the applicants will be assessed by an assessment committee. On the basis of the recommendation of the assessment committee, the Dean of the Faculty of Engineering and Science will make a decision for allocating the stipend.
