The project:

The evaporative drying of droplets dispersed in a gas phase is a key process in a broad range of applications from spray drying and the production of functional nano- and micro-particles, to crop spraying, the delivery of pharmaceuticals for inhalation and spray painting. As droplets dry and solvent evaporates, their composition and rheological properties change. Droplets can become increasingly viscous and heterogeneous in composition. Often, drying droplets coalesce, forming a single composite particle that is initially non-spherical and may take some time to relax in shape, or deposit on a substrate. Coalescence between droplets may be desirable (e.g. when an agglomerated spray dried product has better dispersion properties) or undesirable (e.g. in wall build-up in spray dryers). In this project, you will work with industrial partners to more fully understand the droplet coalescence and surface impaction processes using state-of-the-art imaging and spectroscopic techniques.
