Postdoc in MBE Crystal growth and characterization at the Center for Quantum Devices

The Center for Quantum Devices at the Niels Bohr Institute, Faculty of Science at University of Copenhagen is offering 2-year (option for 1 additional year) Post Doc scholarships in synthesis of III-V nanomaterials using molecular beam epitaxy. The position is open from 1 October 2020 or after agreement.

Our research

The Center of Quantum of Quantum Devices at the Niels Bohr Institute, Copenhagen, is in collaboration with Microsoft Quantum working on developing topological quantum materials based on hybrid epitaxial crystal growth. The Center for Quantum Devices is a basic research center supported by the Danish National Research Foundation, comprising materials research, experimental physics, nanoelectronics and condensed matter theory. Project description

The position will focus on experimental growth of III/V semiconductor nanowires and interconnected nanowire networks using selective area growth. The project involves growth using molecular beam epitaxy (MBE) and characterization of the structures using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), atomic force microscopy and other relevant techniques. The project is carried out in close collaboration with the Microsoft Quantum group located in both Lyngby and at Centre of Quantum Devices.

Applicants should hold a PhD degree in Physics or related area with good results and good English skills. As criteria for the assessment of your qualifications emphasis will also be laid on previous publications and relevant experience, such as experience with molecular beam epitaxy growth, semiconductor processing, and morphology characterization. Understanding of dilution refrigerators and cryogenic electronics measurements and previous expertise on nanowire hybrid materials and experience with preparation of nanowire growth templates will be a benefit.

Essential experience and skills

  • You have a PhD degree in physics or similar
  • You have a profound knowledge of molecular beam epitaxy
  • You have a profound knowledge of III/V nano materials (preferably III-As and III-Sb’s)
  • You are used to work in an academic lab
  • You have prior experience working in collaborative research projects
  • You have programming experience (preferably Python) with focus on data analysis
  • You have experience with calibration of growth rates and maintenance of MBE systems
  • Good English skills, written and spoken

Desirable experience and skills

  • You have hands-on experience with optical/e-beam lithography
  • You have cleanroom processing experience with an emphasis on thin films deposition (PECVD/ALD) and dry/wet chemical etching.
  • You have hands-on experience with metrology tools such as optical microscopy, AFM, SEM, profilometry, ellipsometry, etc.

Place of employment

The place of employment is at the Centre for Quantum devices, University of Copenhagen. You will be located both at the H.C. Ørsted Institute (Copenhagen) and at Microsoft Quantum (Lyngby).

Terms of employment

The position is covered by the Memorandum on Job Structure for Academic Staff.

Terms of appointment and payment accord to the agreement between the Ministry of Finance and The Danish Confederation of Professional Associations on Academics in the State.

The starting salary is currently up to DKK 437.843 including annual supplement (+ pension up to DKK 74.871). Negotiation for salary supplement is possible.
