Studentship description


This project uses advanced many-body quantum mechanics and computer simulation to understand nuclear fusion, fission and allied reaction processes. 

The funding is for a three-year research programme leading to the degree of Ph.D. The project will focus on theoretical investigations of nuclear structure and reactions using the density functional theory approach to many-body quantum mechanics, as applied to nuclear physics scenarios being studied currently in experimental facilities and of relevance to astrophysical nuclear processes. 

This project will commence on the 7th October 2019, with a duration of 3 years. 

Entry requirements


A first Class or Upper Second Honours degree (or equivalent overseas qualification) in an appropriate discipline (e.g., physics or mathematics and physics). You should be able to demonstrate excellent mathematical, analytic, programming skills. 

A score of 6.5 or above (or equivalent) with 6.0 in each individual category. 



This is a research council funded studentship. The studentship covers the University tuition fees (at EU/UK level) and provides an annual tax free stipend for UK students (rate for 2019-2020 is £14,777 p.a. tax-free).
