Position Summary/Purpose of Position:

The plasma theory group at the University of Maryland – College Park is seeking a postdoctoral associate in the area of stellarator optimization. The stellarator, a plasma confinement device that uses magnetic fields with carefully designed shaping, is a candidate configuration for fusion energy, as well as a general charged particle trap. The postdoc will work to understand how the magnetic field in a stellarator can be shaped to optimize confinement. In particular, methods of global and multi-objective optimization will be applied, along with an asymptotic expansion of the underlying equations. The project will involve some amount of both analytic theory and scientific computing. The project could be weighted more towards theory or towards numerical work, depending on the candidate’s interests.

Minimum Qualifications:

• PhD in a related field such as plasma physics or applied mathematics. If you have not yet defended, indicate your expected defense date.
• Fluency in one or more of the following languages: python, C++, fortran, Matlab, Mathematica.
• Previous experience with stellarators is an advantage but is not necessary.

Additional Information:

The start date is flexible.

This appointment will initially be for two years. There may be a possibility of extension contingent upon mutual agreement and the availability of funds. Salary is expected to start at $67,000.

Maryland’s plasma theory group carries out research on a diverse range of problems, including space and astrophysical plasmas, fusion energy (including tokamaks, mirror machines, and stellarators), accelerator physics, laser-matter interaction, and basic plasma physics. We have a strong collaboration network with experimentalists and applied mathematicians, and are members of the Simons Collaboration on Hidden Symmetries and Fusion Energy (https://hiddensymmetries.princeton.edu/). Students and postdocs in our group are given strong support for career development, including opportunities to present at conferences and to build their professional networks. The postdoc position would be based in the University of Maryland’s Institute for Research in Electronics and Applied Physics (IREAP).
