Post Doctoral Researcher

Department : Geography

Vacancy ID : 004821

Closing Date : 06-Nov-2019

Maynooth University is committed to a strategy in which the primary University goals of excellent research and scholarship and outstanding education are interlinked and equally valued.

We are seeking to appoint a Post-Doctoral Researcher in the field of Decadal Climate Prediction of the North Atlantic and Europe, with special focus on Ireland and its surrounding seas. The position will be funded by the Marine Institute/European Regional Development Fund project A4 (Aigéin, Aeráid, agus Athrú Atlantaigh—Oceans, Climate, and Atlantic Change) and run for a duration of 3 years. This position is associated with Work Package 3 of the A4 project looking at decadal prediction. The work package is led by Dr André Düsterhus at Maynooth University. The appointee will be expected to collaborate nationally and internationally with partners in the UK, the US, and Germany, and the wider climatological community.

In the past decade, the field of decadal predictions have seen rapid developments in predicting the climate. Several centres around the world are now issuing initialised decadal predictions on a regular basis and one place where predictions are consistently better in initialised than uninitialised systems is the North Atlantic. The aim of this position will be to take predictions from different centres as a basis to develop new approaches to better understand and predict climate on a regional scale.

The Post-Doctoral Researcher is expected to develop their independent research and establish themselves in the climate science community. Within the newly set-up decadal prediction group the successful applicant will lead studies aiming for publications in high impact journals and communicate their research to stakeholders and the general public.

Post-Doctoral Researcher Salary Scale: €37,874 - €40,221 per annum (3 points)

Appointment will be made in accordance with the Department of Finance pay guidelines.

*New entrants to the public sector will be appointed on the first point of the above scale.
