Postdoc in advanced crystallographic studies of lytic polysaccharide monooxygenases

A two year position is available to study lytic polysaccharide monooxygenases (LPMOs)  by advanced crystallographic methods in the group of Prof. Leila Lo Leggio. LPMOs are a relatively newly discovered class of copper metalloenzymes able to degrade recalcitrant polysaccharides (see reviews at http://journals.iucr.org/m/issues/2016/06/00/be5273/ ndex.html and https://doi.org/10.1042/BST20170549). e have been studying the structure and function of these enzymes in collaboration with academic and industrial partners for a number of years.  

 

The postdoctoral research activities will primarily focus on ‘kinetic’ crystallography approaches aimed to further elucidate the mechanism or mechanisms by which LPMOs can break glycosidic bonds oxidatively. The approaches to be taken will include both trapping of intermediates to be studied by ‘conventional’ crystallography and truly time-resolved techniques such as Laue diffraction and serial crystallography, including use of spectroscopic methods to follow the reaction. The postdoctoral researcher may also get involved in neutron diffraction studies that have been initiated by a PhD student in the laboratory.  

 

Solid experience in structure determination by macromolecular crystallography is an absolute requirement for the successful applicant. Additionally, previous experience with spectroscopic analysis of reaction mechanisms and/or crystallographic intermediate trapping and/or time-resolved studies by diffraction techniques are strongly desired qualifications. Previous research on carbohydrate modifying enzymes and/or copper enzymes is additionally qualifying.   

 

The postdoctoral researcher activities will be integrated with the other research activities of the group on LPMOs. Funding of the position comes from an Independent Research Fund (DFF) grant to Prof. Leila Lo Leggio and the project is additionally integrated with the HOPE project (including a larger constellation of researchers in Denmark working on LPMOs, https://ign.ku.dk/hope/). Leila Lo Leggio’s laboratory is part of ISBUC (Integrated Structural Biology at the University of Copenhagen https://isbuc.ku.dk/) 

 

The postdoc’s duties will include primarily research within the project and a minor component of teaching duties. The post may also include performance of other duties.

Terms of employment 

The position is covered by the Memorandum on Job Structure for Academic Staff.  

 

Terms of appointment and payment accord to the agreement between the Ministry of Finance and The Danish Confederation of Professional Associations on Academics in the State.  

 

The starting salary is currently up to DKK 426.625 including annual supplement (+ pension up to DKK 72.952). Negotiation for salary supplement is possible.
