Postdoctoral Fellow in Electron Microscopy
Stockholm University Department of Materials and Environmental Chemistry

Postdoctoral Fellow in Electron Microscopy

at the Department of Materials and Environmental Chemistry.

Closing date: 06 April 2020.

Stockholm University is one of the world’s leading education institutes. Here, more than 35,000 students and 5,000 staff are active within science, the humanities and the social sciences. The Department of Materials and Environmental Chemistry, MMK ( is one of the biggest departments at the Faculty of Natural Sciences with about 130 employees.

MMK is a leading institution in materials synthesis and processing, structural characterization and materials applications. It includes physical, inorganic, structural, and materials chemistry, the latter constituting one of the leading research directions at Stockholm University. Important characterization methods at the department today are X-ray, electron and neutron crystallography, scanning and transmission electron microscopy, and various spectroscopic methods.

Project description
The project “A multidimensional toolkit for modern electron microscopy” was recently funded by The Swedish Foundation for Strategic Research. The goal of the project is to develop a toolkit enabling high throughput, high precision scanning and multidimensional experiments on existing transmission electron microscopes for materials and life science research. Acquisition and processing of multidimensional data is the core of this project. Key challenges include the assembly of hardware-based data collection instrumentation as well as the development of software-based analysis tools for very large data sets.

Main responsibilities
The position will involve data acquistion and development of methods for processing of large volumes of data in (semi-)automated manner, such as scanning electron diffraction, EDS and momentum-revolved EELS. The quantitative analysis and presetation of the processed data will be performed by using in-house developed or existing open source software.

Qualification requirements

Postdoctoral positions are appointed primarily for purposes of research. Applicants are expected to hold a Swedish doctoral degree or an equivalent degree from another country.

Assessment criteria
The degree should have been completed no more than three years before the deadline for applications. An older degree may be acceptable under special circumstances, which may involve sick leave, parental leave, clinical attachment, elected positions in trade unions, or similar.

The selection will be based on both scientific excellence and well-documented experience in transmission electron microscopy, scientific programming and method development. A suitable background is a PhD in science or engineering. Proven experience in transmission electron microsocpy, scientific programming and method development is essential. Experience in data processing using Python or similar packages is an advantage. Experience on processing large data is a bonus, but not essential.

The successful candidate will join a vibrant multidisciplinary team of students, post-docs and senior researchers and should therefore be a self-motivated and good team player as well as an independent researcher. Results will be used by the academic and industrial collaborators, thus excellent communication and organizational skills are also necessary.

Terms of employment
The position involves full-time employment for a maximum of two years, with the possibility of extension under special circumstances. Starting date as per agreement.

Stockholm University strives to be a workplace free from discrimination and with equal opportunities for all.
