Postdoctoral Fellow in Environmental Chemistry
Stockholm University Department of Environmental Science
Sweden

Postdoctoral Fellow in environmental chemistry focusing on exposure and effects of chemical mixtures Stockholm

at Department of Enviromental science. Closing date: 14 April 2020.

The Department of Environmental Science is one of the biggest departments at the Faculty of Science. The department is divided into four units with more than 170 researchers, teachers, doctoral students and technical/administrative staff from over 30 countries. Research and teaching focuses on chemical contaminants, atmospheric science, biogeochemistry and (eco)toxicology. As an employee at the Department of Environmental Science you will be part of a dynamic environment with research in leading research areas and with a strong international profile.

Project description
The position will be associated with the project INSERT funded by the Swedish EPA. INSERT aims at improving our understanding of the cumulative effects of chemical exposure and other stressors in sediments. INSERT is a collaboration of experts in ecotoxicology, environmental chemistry, ecology and biochemistry. This specific postdoctoral project focuses on environmental chemistry aspects of mixture toxicity and aims at generating knowledge on how mixtures of hydrophobic chemicals contribute to observed effects in benthic amphipods. Much of the work will involve the design and development of an experimental system, with particular focus on development and application of the chemical activity concept in toxicity studies.

Main responsibilities
The position involves research, including experimental design and experimental work, chemical analysis of organic micropollutants, interpretation of data and data management, writing, and publishing. The project is interdisciplinary and involves close collaboration with other researchers within the project as well as with stakeholders in the project’s reference group. The candidate therefore needs to have an interest in understanding exposure and effects of chemicals from a broad perspective.

Qualification requirements
Postdoctoral positions are appointed primarily for purposes of research. Applicants are expected to hold a Swedish doctoral degree or an equivalent degree from another country.

Assessment criteria
The degree should have been completed no more than three years before the deadline for applications. An older degree may be acceptable under special circumstances, which may involve sick leave, parental leave, clinical attachment, elected positions in trade unions, or similar. Applicants with an older degree may be in question, but then with another form of employment.

In the appointment process, special attention will be given to research skills in a relevant area for the position. The successful postdoc candidate is expected to have a PhD in environmental chemistry or equivalent, with knowledge in chemical analysis and environmental fate of organic contaminants. Experience in ecotoxicity testing and handling of living organisms is a strong asset.

Terms of employment
The position involves full-time employment for a maximum of two years, with the possibility of extension under special circumstances. Start date 2020-09-01 or as per agreement.
