The Department of Astronomy at Stockholm University has around 80 employees. The main research areas are, Planet and Star Formation, Computational Astrophysics, Galaxies, Supernovae and Solar Physics. The Department of Astronomy is situated at the AlbaNova Science Centre in Stockholm, together with the Department of Physics, the Physics Departments at the Royal Institute of Technology (KTH), and the Nordic Institute for Theoretical Physics (Nordita), providing a vibrant international research environment.

Project description

The position will be associated with work relating to extrasolar planetary systems and stellar multiplicity, using high-resolution/high-contrast imaging and spectroscopy, high-precision astrometry, and other methods. Stockholm University has access to a range of facilities including membership in ESO and NOT, which are frequently used within the group. There is also interest in future instruments and facilities such as ERIS, JWST and E-ELT.

Programs for which Prof. MArkus Janson is PI currently include the ESO Large Program BEAST, which examines the planetary environments of massive stars with SPHERE; the AstraLux M-dwarf multiplicity program which has monitored M-dwarf binaries over 10+ years; and the STARE satellite concept for the astrometric detection of Earth analogues. The department is also involved in the current CHEOPS and the future PLATO missions.

Main responsibilities

The postdoctoral fellow will preform research in the field of exoplanets or stellar multiplicity with Prof. Markus Janson. It is expected that the postdoctoral fellow will contribute to efforts within the group, but there will also be opportunities for the fellow to develop their own lines of research.

Qualification requirements

Postdoctoral positions are appointed primarily for purposes of research. Applicants are expected to hold a Swedish doctoral degree or an equivalent degree from another country.

Assessment criteria

The degree should have been completed no more than three years before the deadline for applications. An older degree may be acceptable under special circumstances, which may involve sick leave, parental leave, clinical attachment, elected positions in trade unions, or similar.

In the appointment process, special attention will be given to research skills directly related to the research conducted in Prof. Janson's group.

Terms of employment

The position involves full-time employment for a maximum of two years, with the possibility of extension under special circumstances. Start date is foreseen for Autumn 2021 or as per agreement.
