Research and graduate education at the department of chemistry and molecular biology comprises a wide scientific field from the atomic and molecular levels all the way through cells to intact organisms. Much of the phenomena studied here impact on our natural environment and living systems. We participate in undergraduate programs in chemistry, molecular biology, medicinal chemistry, biology, marine sciences, and pharmacy.

The Division of Atmospheric Science within the Department of Chemistry and Molecular Biology takes fundamental molecular approaches to quantifying transport and reaction processes in the atmosphere. A unifying research theme is the study of atmospheric aerosol, and the research activities range from theoretical studies of chemical reactions and particle phase transitions, to applied work including field studies of fundamental atmospheric processes. The research themes are united by their importance to key issues of environmental importance, including climate and air quality.

Job assignments

The Department of Chemistry and Molecular Biology at the University of Gothenburg is seeking an enthusiastic scholar to join a dynamic research group within the department’s Division of Atmospheric Science. The position will have a multifaceted research focus with the overall emphasis on developing molecular-level understanding of key processes that occur at or on atmospheric surfaces.

During the first year of the position the scholar will be expected to take a leading role in organizing field studies related to capturing and characterizing aerosol properties that are associated with persistent mixed phase cloud events. The measurement focus will be on ice nucleating particles (INP) and cloud condensation nuclei (CCN) and therefore previous experience with INP and CCN measurement systems is highly desirable.

The scholar will also join more fundamentally focused experimental beamtimes using synchrotron-based spectroscopy (e.g., SLS and MAX IV). These activities can provide a recent PhD an excellent opportunity to grow their competence more broadly.

Recent PhDs with backgrounds in atmospheric science, chemistry, physics, and quantitative geosciences are encouraged to apply. Experience with Python, MatLab, LabView and/or other data analysis and instrument I/O packages is advantageous, as is any experience with high vacuum systems.

Eligibility

Eligible to be employed as a postdoctoral fellow is a person who has completed a doctoral degree, artistic doctoral degree or who has a foreign degree that is deemed to correspond to a doctoral degree. In the first instance, the person who has completed the degree no more than three years before the end of the application period should be considered. Even those who have previously graduated should be considered in the first place, if there are special reasons. Special reasons refer to leave due to illness, service in the total defense, positions of trust within trade unions and student organizations or parental leave or other similar circumstances.

Qualifications

The candidate should have completed a PhD in a relevant discipline and be able to demonstrate scientific achievements compatible with career stage and opportunity . Scientific achievements include academic publications in scientific journals or technical reports in the field. A background or interest in atmospheric chemistry, aerosol physics, physical chemistry, or related discipline is desired. The work language will be English and strong writing skills are essential.

A demonstration of previous field and/or laboratory work and quantitative skills is advantageous. The same applies for knowledge of and previous use of aerosol measurement systems common to the field like particle counters (OPC, CPC, SMPS, etc.) and INP and/or CCN instruments.

Employment

The position is a time-limited positon on fulltime (100%) for two years placed at the Department of Chemistry and Molecular Biology in Gothenburg. Starting in August/September or upon agreement.
