The Department of Earth Sciences at Uppsala University conducts education at the undergraduate, advanced and doctoral levels, as well as research and has operations in two locations, in Uppsala and Visby. The postdoctoral position is located at Campus Gotland in Visby within the research program Natural Resources and Sustainable Development (NRHU). Campus Gotland is an international campus in the middle of world heritage town Visby.

Natural Resources and Sustainable Development are focus areas at the Department of Earth Sciences regarding research, education and collaboration. At Campus Gotland, NRHU research focuses on, among other things, transdisciplinary research on fisheries, aquaculture, nature-based tourism, ecosystem services and coastal zone management. NRHU is responsible for courses in the bachelor program in Environmental Science and the master program in Sustainable Destination Development, and freestanding courses in Sustainable Development at Campus Gotland. Campus Gotland also has Blue Center Gotland, a collaboration between Uppsala University, Region Gotland and the County Administrative Board of Gotland Blått centrum Gotland. Uppsala University also has a field station on Gotland, The Research Station Ar which is adapted for laboratory experiments on e.g. fish.

Duties/Project description: The position as a postdoc at NRHU at the Department of Earth Sciences on Campus Gotland is part of the new strategic Swedish food centre initiative the ‘Blue food - seafood of the future’. Blue food has brought together leading universities, institutes, innovation actors, regions, municipalities, organizations and around forty companies all over the country under the vision to make Sweden a learning producer of attractive and sustainable seafood. The project involves a close collaboration between ‘Blue food - seafood of the future’, Blue Center Gotland and NRHU at the Department of Earth Sciences, Uppsala University.

The focus of the project carried out at NRHU is on strong sustainable development of the seafood of the future where the environment/ecology sets the boundaries. Within the project, the linkages between resources (seafood) and the ecosystem will be explored. The focus is on seafood (especially fish in all different stages of life) in shallow coastal environments and especially bottom vegetation. Linkages between habitat, fish and fishing, including sport fishing, will be examined from a seafood perspective.

Furthermore, the impact on the ecosystem of catches or supplies of seafood species and other environmental factors will also be investigated. The postdoc will be active in several parts of the project at NRHU. Some of the keywords within the project at NRHU are aquaculture, coastal habitats and associated seafood, as well as strong sustainable development. An interdisciplinary approach is the foundation of the project.

The geographical focus area for the postdoctoral project is Gotland, an island in the middle of the Baltic Sea. We are now looking for a postdoctoral fellow who can contribute with research that is beneficial for sustainable seafood development and coastal zone management around Gotland, but also in general. The postdoctoral fellow will plan and be involved in data collection as well as design and carry out analyzes. The candidate is expected to produce high-quality scientific articles that are suitable for scientific publication in high-profile journals and presentation at national and international conferences. The research results are also expected to contribute information that develops the management of aquaculture, fisheries and the coastal zone in general. Employment as a postdoc can also include teaching for a maximum of 20% of the tasks.

Requirements: To qualify for an employment as a postdoctor you must have a PhD degree or a foreign degree equivalent to a PhD degree in environmental science, ecology, aquatic environments, natural resource management or marine biology. The PhD degree must have been obtained no more than three years prior to the application deadline. The three year period can be extended due to circumstances such as sick leave, parental leave, duties in labour unions, etc. Very good communication skills in English, both orally and in writing, are a requirement.

Additional qualifications: Knowledge and/or experience of working with issues related to aquatic environments, seafood, fishing, aquaculture and management of the coastal zone is particular merits. Practical experiences of fieldwork in the Baltic Sea, surveys and/or interview methodology is desirable. Knowledge in statistics, modelling and analytical skills as well as proven creativity and the ability to work transdisciplinary are merits. Driving license for car is merit.

The application must also contain a curriculum vitae (CV), copies of relevant grade documents, a copy of the doctoral dissertation, publications and other documents (eg letters of recommendation). Three reference persons should be stated with contact information.

When selecting among qualified applicants, emphasis will be placed on scientific skill in relation to the duties. The University will after an overall assessment of documented qualifications, competences and skills, consider the candidate that has the best qualifications to carry out and develop current work tasks and support the positive development of the department.

Salary: Individual salary.
Starting date: 15-05-2021 or as otherwise agreed.
