The Postdoctoral Scholar will conduct laboratory research as part of Prof. Clayton Radke (Department of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering) and Dr. Ricardo San Martin (SCET) efforts to develop novel purification methods for its use in pharmaceuticals and food.

The successful candidate will monitor secondary metabolite production of a large number of plants (collection of samples, analysis and data management and interpretation), studies on extraction and purification using different chromatographic techniques, and scaling-up of best procedures. The work also involves measuring different components found in the extracts, e.g., chlorophyl, proteins, phenolics. The postdoc will be responsible for leading experiments and communicating results through lab presentations, publications, and conferences. The postdoc will also be responsible for working and supporting student teams at UC Berkeley and collaborating with different research teams outside of UC Berkeley.

Additional qualifications (required at time of start)
  • PhD (or equivalent international degree).
  • No more than four years of post-degree research experience by start date.
Preferred qualifications
  • Doctoral degree in Chemistry, Biochemistry, Chemical and Biological Engineering, or related discipline.
  • Publication record in the area of Chemistry, Biochemistry, Chemical and Biological Engineering, or related fields.
  • Experience training and mentoring junior scientists
  • Demonstrated experience with analytical techniques including HPLC and MS.
  • Demonstrated experience of column chromatographic techniques to purify and separate biomolecules.
  • Experience scaling up purification processes.
