The School of Physics and Astronomy (SPA) at Queen Mary University of London (QMUL) maintains a tradition of outstanding research in ground-breaking fields. Research in the School is internationally excellent, with academic and research staff and students. This work straddles two of our research groups: The Particle Physics Research Centre (PPRC) and the Centre for Condensed Matter and Materials Physics (CCMMP). The PPRC undertakes data analysis and hardware development work on a number of particle physics experiments including: ATLAS, Ice Cube, Hyper-K, MoEDAL, T2K, and SNO+. The CCMMP focusses on the understanding the physics of material properties and application to real world problems. Our detector R&D areas include silicon detector development for the ATLAS tracker upgrade and future colliders, organic semiconductor radiation detector development for future Dark Matter experiments and nuclear security applications, and detector development for neutrino experiments. This post is on the interface between the PPRC and CCMMP for the development of position sensitive organic semiconductor radiation detectors.


Post Information and Requirements

 

The SPA has a vacancy for a Postdoctoral Research Assistant to work on developing organic semiconductor radiation detectors. We have developed bulk heterojunction devices based on a blend of P3HT and PCBM. These devices have been extensively tested via exposure to photoconduction and alpha particle radiation. They are single channel devices that have demonstrated our ability to detect radiation with a bias voltage as low as 1V.  In order to improve this technology further we are targeting the development of multichannel proof of concept devices.

 

The PPRC group has a long track record in working on silicon detectors for particle physics applications, including OPAL at CERN’s Large Electron Positron Collider and the current ATLAS detector at CERN’s Large Hadron Collider.  We have a team working on the design and construction of an upgrade of the ATLAS silicon tracker.  The CCMMP has a long track record of working with organic semiconductor devices including the development of OLEDs. This work combines the interests and capabilities of these two research groups to focus on the development of novel low-power radiation detector capabilities.  Our research in this area research is currently funded by the Science and Technology Facilities Council (UK), the Atomic Weapons Establishment AWE Ltd. and QMUL are investing in this 1 year post to develop a proof of concept, via QM Innovation, for multichannel detectors focussing on industrial applications with external partners including the AWE.

 

Applicants should have, or be about to gain, a PhD in Physics or similar field, or have equivalent experience in a relevant field, and are expected to have experience of organic semiconductor device fabrication and testing. Strong hardware skills are essential and the ability to programme in C++, Python or LabView is desirable, although not essential, for data analysis. The post will be located at QMUL’s Mile End Campus in London but will require travel to external locations to discuss developments with external stakeholders, including QM Innovation and external companies interested in using this technology. The candidate is expected to work in various laboratories and workshops, and adhere to relevant health and safety regulations at all times.

 

The post is full time, available as soon as possible. It is funded for 1 year by a QMUL Proof of Concept grant. Starting salary will be £33,615 per annum inclusive of London Allowance. Benefits include 30 days’ annual leave, a pension scheme and interest-free season ticket loan.
