Postdoctoral Research Assistant in Climate Dynamics University of Oxford Department of Geography United Kingdom

Grade 7: £32,236 p.a.

We are seeking a Postdoctoral Research Assistant (PDRA) to join a new project which seeks to understand the climate dynamics which control variability and change of the main rainfall-bearing systems over South America. The PDRA will join the Climate Science for Service Partnership (CSSP) between the UK and Brazil supported by the Newton Fund. CSSP-Brazil involves close collaboration between colleagues in the Met Office and research partners in Brazil and the UK.

This project is part of the programme work package which focuses on understanding rainfall processes in the observed climate and how well these processes are represented in climate model simulations. The PDRA will work on diagnosing the dynamics driving variability of tropical-extratropical interactions over South America, assess the representation of these drivers in state-of-the-art weather and climate models, and explore future change of these weather systems. The proposed research forms part of ongoing efforts to understand the drivers of rainfall variability and change in the global subtropics.

You must hold or be close to completion of a PhD in physical, environmental or mathematical sciences and have expertise in climate dynamics and/or synoptic meteorology. You will have the ability to perform data analysis in Python or similar (and be willing to learn Python programming) and a good appreciation of the strengths and limitations of climate models. Evidence of high quality research and publications record commensurate with career stage is essential.

This is a full-time post offered for 18 months in the first instance or until 31 March 2021, whichever comes first. Part-time working arrangements will also be considered.

Applications for this vacancy are to be made online. You will be required to upload a CV and supporting statement as part of your online application.

The closing date for applications is 12.00 noon on Wednesday 19 June 2019, and interviews will be held on 28 June 2019.
