Postdoctoral Research Assistant in Low Temperature Experimental Physics of Quantum Matter
University of Oxford Department of Physics
United States

Applications are invited for a Postdoctoral Research Assistant in Low Temperature Experimental Physics of Quantum Matter. The post is available initially for a fixed-term duration of 2 years, with the possibility of extension for 1 year. This project will concentrate upon studies of exotic many-body states of electronic, magnetic and atomic quantum matter [1] with a focus on direct experimental visualization or perception of the quantum phenomenology.

Systems under study include superconductors, Bose condensates, heavy fermions, ferromagnetic topological insulators, Dirac and Weyl semimetals, magnetic monopole fluids, quantum spin liquids and exciton fluids.

Davis Group operates as a single research unit using a suite of complementary instruments in two ultralow vibration laboratories in the Beecroft Building at the University of Oxford (UK) and in the Kane Building at University College Cork (IE) [2]. PDRAs based at Oxford will carry out research at both sites

The successful candidate will have a combination of specialised knowledge, skills and successful experience in several of the research areas listed in the job description. The postholder will have the opportunity to teach.

Applicants should hold a PhD, or be close to completion in physics and have a strong background in many-body quantum mechanics and quantum matter research. Previous experience in the field of low temperature physics of quantum matter will be an advantage.

The primary focus of the Postdoctoral Researcher will be research however a particular emphasis during this stage should include to:

  • conduct a specified programme of research under the supervision and direction of a Principal Investigator/Project Leader; • engage in appropriate training and professional development opportunities as required by the Principal Investigator, School or College in order to develop research skills and competencies; • gain experience in grant writing; • engage in the dissemination of the results of the research in which they are engaged, as directed by, with the support of and under the supervision of a Principal Investigator; • become familiar with the publication process; • acquire generic and transferable skills (including project management, business skills and postgraduate mentoring/supervision); • engage in the wider research and scholarly activities of the Research Group, Department or College; • interact closely with postgraduate research students who are studying for a Masters or a PhD and possibly have an agreed role in supporting these students in their day to day research in conjunction with an academic supervisor; • carry out administrative work to support the programme of research; • carry out additional duties as may reasonably be required within the general scope and level of the post; • contribute to costing research grant proposals and assist in the financial management of a research project.
