Postdoctoral Research Assistant in LSST LSB Science in Fixed Term 2.5 years
Liverpool John Moores University, Department of Physics, Astronomy and Mathematics
United Kingdom

Applications are invited to apply for a 2.5 year STFC supported postdoctoral position to perform key preparatory work for the Large Synoptic Survey Telescope (LSST). The work will focus on developing techniques to optimize sky subtraction for the preservation of low-surface-brightness features (e.g. intra-cluster light and extended tidal features around merging galaxies) and mitigating shredding by de-blenders, both of which are critical for enabling low-surface-brightness science using LSST.

The successful candidate will work with both Prof Chris Collins at the Astrophysics Research Institute of Liverpool John Moores University and Dr Sugata Kaviraj within the Centre for Astrophysics Research at the University of Hertfordshire. The position is designed to enable the postdoc to spend time at both institutions (nominally the first year at LJMU and the subsequent time at Hertfordshire). Candidates should have or be expected to shortly obtain a PhD (or equivalent) in astrophysics or a closely related subject.

The School of Physics, Astronomy & Mathematics at Hertfordshire hold the Institute of Physics Juno Champion status and an Athena SWAN Silver award. The ARI also holds Juno Practitioner status and an Athena SWAN Bronze award. These demonstrate the commitment of both institutes to good practice towards advancing gender equality and creating better working environments for men and women. Both institutions are equal opportunities employers and welcome applicants from all backgrounds and communities irrespective of age, transgender status, disability, gender, sexual orientation, ethnicity and Religion or belief.
